Prince William And Kate Middleton’s Sweet Birthday Message To Prince Philip

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to Instagram to pay tribute to Prince Philip, William's grandfather, for his 99th birthday with a series of photos featuring Philip.

On Wednesday, Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrated Philip's 99th birthday with a series of special photos.

Sharing the photo gallery on their Instagram account @kensingtonroyal, the first photo featured a smiling Kate standing with great-grandfather of her children as he waves, while the second photo showed a joyous moment between William and his grandpa—the two sharply dressed as they laugh together. "Wishing a very happy 99th Birthday to The Duke of Edinburgh!" they wrote, using his royal title.

The last photo in the series is the newest released portrait of Prince Philip and the Queen. The rare public photo—which is the first public sighting of the Duke since he was seen leaving hospital in December last year—was taken in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Taken during the sunny spell of weather that the UK enjoyed last week, the Queen and Prince Philip are photographed standing side by side on the lawn, with a glimpse of the castle behind them.

Prince Charles honored his father's milestone birthday with two father-son photos posted on the Clarence House Instagram. A monochrome photo featuring Philip taking a young Charles for a boat ride was the first photo displayed in the series, with the second image capturing a present-day the duo in the middle of a conversation.

Philip is known to have a close bond with his grandsons, William, and Harry. After their mother Diana’s death in 1997, it was Philip who is said to have persuaded her sons William and Harry to walk behind her coffin, saying,

‘If you don't walk, I think you'll regret it later. If I walk, will you walk with me?’

To their family, Philip and the Queen (or "Lilibet," as he affectionately calls her) are relationship goals. "I'd love to know their secret," William said in a BBC documentary about the Queen’s life. "I think it's fantastic and I've regularly asked them both how they've managed it because they are the most lovely couple."
