Royal Family Shares New Portrait Of Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Philip For His 99th Birthday

The Duke of Edinburgh turned 99 on Wednesday, and to celebrate the occasion, Buckingham Palace released a new photo of the Prince and Queen Elizabeth II on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
After spending the past few months social distancing with the Queen at Windsor Castle during the coronavirus lockdown, Buckingham Palace has released a new picture of the couple to commemorate Prince Philip's 99th birthday.
The rare public photo—which is the first public sighting of the Duke since he was seen leaving hospital in December last year—was taken in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Taken during the sunny spell of weather that the UK enjoyed last week, the Queen and Prince Philip are photographed standing side by side on the lawn, with a glimpse of the castle behind them.

According to Tatler, the Queen wears a heart-shaped Cullinan V 18.8 carat diamond brooch, while the birthday boy wears a Household Division tie. The poignant photograph is the first public sighting of the couple—who have been married since 1947—together since last year.
Traditionally, the Duke's birthday would be celebrated with gun salutes in London, but due to the coronavirus pandemic and the continued ban on social gatherings, the Queen felt such celebrations would be inappropriate. Similar royal celebrations for her own birthday in April were also canceled, the first time in her 68-year reign.
The photograph follows on from another recent sighting of the Queen, who was seen riding her horse Balmoral Fern in Windsor Home Park last week. Philip is currently the oldest living member of the British royal family and third longest-living member overall. At age 94, his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, ranks sixth.
The almost centenarian had quite a fan club in his heyday. When he married the Queen, women nationwide were swooned by his classically good looks. He was six feet tall, blonde, and had piercing blue eyes. He could always tease a smile out of his wife just by his quick wit, and we like to think he still does.
