Precious Comments Queen Elizabeth II's Has Made About Her Great-Grandchildren

Dec 28, 2020 by apost team

Queen Elizabeth II, 94, is set to become a great-grandmother for the ninth and tenth time. Her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, 30, is expecting her first child due in early 2021 with husband Jack Brooksbank, 34, while her eldest granddaughter Zara Tindall, 39, is expecting her third child with husband Mike Tindall, 42. The Queen has rarely talked about her great-grandchildren in public but here are some of the most memorable comments she has made of her eight little royal descendants and also some sweet moments she has shared with them.

As a little girl, the Queen was affectionately addressed as “Lillibet,” by her loved ones. She has then gone by several names when she became Queen: Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, or simply the Queen. But according to Town & Country, she goes by one other name, Gan-Gan, a name which only a select few (eight, specifically) can call her. The Queen has eight great-grandchildren, here are some of the most lovely comments their Gan-Gan has made about them and their sweet moments together.

Savannah Phillips, nine

The eldest child of Peter Phillips, 43, and his now ex-wife Autumn Phillips, 42, nine-year-old Savannah Phillips, is also the oldest grandchild of Princess Anne and the oldest great-grandchild of the Queen. According to Royalty Wiki, she was 12th in line for the throne at the time of her birth on December 29th, 2010, but is currently 16th in line following the birth of her second cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, and Archie Harrison Mounbatten-Windsor.

Unlike her Cambridge cousins, Savannah does not hold a royal title. This is because children of the daughter of a monarch are, according to the BBC, not "entitled to the rank" of his or her royal highness.

The Queen was happy about the arrival of her first great-grandchild. When she was born, a statement from Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, Captain Mark Phillips and Autumn's family have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

Isla Phillips, eight

Isla Phillips was born just a little over a year later from her big sister, Savannah. Like Savannah, the eight-year-old does not have a royal title and is 17th in line to the throne. It has been speculated that Isla’s middle name, Elizabeth, was given in honor of her great-grandmother, but was never confirmed as per Town & Country.

After her birth on March 29th, 2012, Buckingham Palace released a statement similar to the one to the announcement of her big sister’s, saying that the Queen was “delighted.” "The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, Captain Mark Phillips and Autumn’s family have been informed and are delighted with the news," the announcement said. "Isla Elizabeth is the second child for Peter and Autumn, the second grandchild for the Princess Royal and the second great-grandchild for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh."

Prince George, seven

As the firstborn of Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton, both 38, Prince George is currently third in line to the British throne.

In her Christmas speech in 2013, the Queen opened up about her first great-grandson, who is also her son Prince Charles' first grandson. According to HELLO! Magazine, she said: "Here at home my own family is a little larger this Christmas. As so many of you will know, the arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance to contemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope." To Prince William and Duchess Kate, she said: "For the new parents, life will never be quite the same again."

Last year, Prince George and his great-grandmother collaborated in making fruit puddings gifted to military veterans by the Royal British Legion for Christmas this year as Harper’s Bazaar reported.

Together with his dad Prince William and his dad Prince Charles, the four royals worked together to create the hand-made delights as part of the Royal British Legion’s Together at Christmas initiative. They were seen smiling and laughing in photos shared by Buckingham Palace as they mixed all the ingredients that made up the sweet treat, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Mia Tindall, six

Mia Tindall is the first child of Mike Tindall, 42, and Zara Tindall, 39. Often showing a lot of expression in photos, Mia has been called by HELLO! Magazine as “one of the cutest young royals.” She became an online celebrity after she was pictured adorably holding her great-grandmother’s handbag in her 90th birthday portrait when she was two years old. According to Good Housekeeping, her dad told Good Morning Britain that the Queen said to her little great-granddaughter to “just hold the handbag now,” during the photoshoot since the toddler had already picked it up.

“It just happened at the right time,” Mike said, according to Good Housekeeping. “She was being a bit naughty. The Queen got it quite right when she told her ‘just hold the handbag now’ and she did that. It ended up being a great photo of her … It just turned out to be the right photo at the right time and it will be something we'll always cherish, I think,” he added. People speculated that the whole thing was staged, but a royal source told the Daily Mail that it was not. 'The moment with Mia was completely spontaneous, it was not staged at all. She just picked up her great-granny’s handbag and that was it,” the source said.

Princess Charlotte, five

Mom Kate revealed that her grandmother-in-law was “very thrilled,” about the arrival of Princess Charlotte. "The Queen was really thrilled that it was a little girl, and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington she was one of our first visitors here,” Kate said during an interview for the Our Queen at Ninety documentary in 2016, according to HELLO! Magazine.

The little Princess, who is fourth in line for the throne, has a lot of things in common with her great-grandmother, including their looks.

From the looks of it (pun intended), Princess Charlotte has inherited the Queen’s piercing gaze that resembles that of Queen Elizabeth’s with her pensive face, which is even more interesting considering the two have an age difference of 89 years and four generations between them. The little princess has also taken after Her Majesty’s subtle but sweet way of smiling, which can be seen from old photos from the Queen in her childhood, particularly one from 1931 where a then-Princess Elizabeth served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Lady May Cambridge. The future Queen was five years old at the time, exactly how old Princess Charlotte is right now.

The two also share a love for horses. As a little girl, the Queen was pictured riding horses, and now even into her 90's Her Majesty has been seen riding on the grounds of Windsor Castle. She is a noted well-accomplished horseman (or, well, woman) and an avid fan of competitive racing. In fact, her love for horses is so strong that it even helped save a breed of horses from going extinct.

Speaking with Kate at the event in 2016, Paralympic Equestrian Natasha Baker told the Mirror that Kate said her then-one-year-old Charlotte enjoyed riding horses. “I asked her how the children were and she said Charlotte is really enjoying her riding which is great to hear and I said we may see her here on a line-up in 20 years' time,” Baker shared of their chat. "She emphasized that Charlotte has this passion for horses and although she doesn’t echo it, she’ll do her best to champion and encourage it."

Prince Louis, two

The Queen made mention of her great-grandson Prince Louis in her Christmas speech in the same year he was born and even had a portrait of him on her desk while she made the speech.

According to HELLO! Magazine, she said, "Closer to home, it’s been a busy year for my family, with two weddings and two babies, and another child expected soon. It helps to keep a grandmother well occupied."

Lena Tindall, two

Lena Tindall was one of the two babies that the Queen mentioned in her 2018 Christmas speech. According to Town & Country, the youngest child of Mike and Zara Tindall is the reported goddaughter of Prince Harry. Not much is reported about the relationship between Mia, Lena, and their great-grandmother as the Tindalls keep their life as low-key as possible. But earlier this month, Vanity Fair said the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip are “delighted” by the news of their granddaughter Zara Tindall being pregnant. In a conversation with his co-hosts on their podcast, The Good The Bad and The Rugby, Mike says that he hopes that it’s a boy. "I'll love it whether a boy or a girl - but please be a boy,” he said.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, one

The 19-month-old son of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle is the Queen’s youngest great-grandchild. Like with her other great-grandchildren, she expressed her joy for the arrival of Sussex's' first child on May 6th, 2019. In her Christmas broadcast in 2019, she said: "Two hundred years on from the birth of my great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, Prince Philip and I have been delighted to welcome our eighth great grandchild into our family." Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819.
