Dec 23, 2020 by apost team

The resemblance between Princess Charlotte, five, and her great-grandmother the Queen has been long drawn by fans since the little royal was a baby. In the Cambridge family’s Christmas card posted on their Instagram account in December 2020, the similarity is seen yet again! Read on to see the photo and decide for yourself whether or not Princess Charlotte looks so much like Queen Elizabeth II.

The resemblance between children and their grandparents

Sometimes a child may not look like their parents at all, but rather their grandparents. This can happen when genes skip on to the next generation. This is exactly the case for five-year-old Princess Charlotte, whose looks fans have long drawn comparisons to that of Queen Elizabeth II, her great-grandmother.

The Cambridge family 2020 Christmas Card

Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 38 years of age, often receive comments on social media from fans saying how adorable their children are. The royal couple is the parents of Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two, who are the third, fourth, and fifth in line for the British throne. Many fans would take their comments to the next level by making comparisons to who the little royals look most alike. Some say Prince George looks most like his paternal grandmother the late Princess Diana, while many claim that Prince Louis is the mini-me of Kate’s father, Michael Middleton. But the one that keeps coming up the most is how similar the Cambridges’ only daughter, Princess Charlotte looks to the Queen.

In the family’s official Christmas Card for 2020, the twinning between the two royals has been made even more apparent. The picture, which was posted on December 17th to @kensingtonroyal, the official Instagram account of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, has fans sharing the same sentiments of the likeness between Princess Charlotte and her paternal great-grandmother.

Fans are royally excited

One comment by Instagram user @issydodo states ‘Charlotte looks so like Queen Elizabeth’ while another user, one @magnoliamom30 said: “Little Charlotte is Elizabeth made over. Beautiful family!” “Little Princess Charlotte looks just like her majesty!” user @ouiouigv commented. Many other similar comments littered the post which currently has nearly 1.7 million likes, all agreeing that the little royal can be seen as a carbon copy of the younger Queen.

In the picture, the family of five are seated on a stack of hay against a background of chopped wood, and they have all dressed alike for the holidays — shirts underneath cozy sweaters, and long pants. Their firstborn Prince George is sat in the corner of the stack, his little brother Prince Louis has the biggest smile on his face as he poses sandwiched between Dad Prince William’s legs, while Princess Charlotte is propped up on her mom Kate’s lap. The family looks to be in good spirits and health amid the festive season.

Breaking down Princess Charlotte and the Queen’s resemblance

From the looks of it (pun intended), Princess Charlotte has inherited the Queen’s piercing gaze that resembles that of Queen Elizabeth’s with her pensive face, which is even more interesting considering the two have an age difference of 89 years and four generations between them. The little princess has also taken after Her Majesty’s subtle but sweet way of smiling, which can be seen from old photos from the Queen in her childhood, particularly one from 1931 where a then-Princess Elizabeth served as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Lady May Cambridge. The future Queen was five years old at the time, exactly how old Princess Charlotte is right now.

PEOPLE magazine pinpoints Princess Charlotte and her great-grandmother’s similarity to be in their eyes and their hair. “Charlotte and her great-grandmother share the same distinctive eye structure – from their matching blue eyes to the arch of their eyebrows,” the magazine writes.

Princess Charlotte has light brown hair, which is darkening more and more as she grows older. The magazine added that the Queen’s hair (before it turned to the glorious gray that is currently) “was a very similar shade to her great-granddaughter.”

The color of their hair may be the same but they don’t share the same hair texture. Looking at vintage photos of the Queen, like the ones we have here in this article, you can see that she has had wavy hair since she was a toddler. Like her parents, Princess Charlotte's hair texture is naturally straight. This is perhaps the only apparent difference between the two royals in terms of their looks.

Fans are always very curious to see which royals resemble each other

In the latest post of popular royal family fan account @loveprincessdiana, a page that has made many posts comparing the looks between royals, a picture of the late Princess Diana is put side by side to a close-up of Princess Charlotte in her family Christmas card photo with the caption: “Do you think they look alike?” The answer was a resounding ‘no’ by many of the page’s followers who in their replies say that she looks like the Queen and not Princess Diana. The account had posted a picture of the Cambridge family’s Christmas card on December 12th, five days before @kensingtonroyal did.

“No... Charlotte looks a lot like the Queen when she was a little girl!” one person wrote. “Nope, she is cute but she doesn’t look like Princess Di,” another said. One commenter wrote that they hope Princess Charlotte’s uncle Prince Harry would have a daughter that looks like his mom. It might be also interesting to note that the late Princess Diana, Princess Charlotte’s grandmother, had naturally straight hair, too.

But it seems as if the likeness between Princess Charlotte and Queen Elizabeth goes beyond the surface. According to PEOPLE, during an event where they got to meet and celebrate British Olympians and Paralympians at Buckingham Palace in 2016, Mom Kate shared that her daughter has developed a love for horses. And we all know who else loves horses. (It is, of course, the Queen!)

Over the years, Queen Elizabeth has never hidden her love of horses. As a little girl, she was pictured riding horses, and now even into her 90's her majesty has been seen riding on the grounds of Windsor Castle. She is a noted well-accomplished horseman (or, well, woman) and an avid fan of competitive racing. In fact, her love for horses is so strong that it even helped save a breed of horses from going extinct.

Speaking with Kate at the event in 2016, Paralympic Equestrian Natasha Baker told the Mirror that Kate said her then-one-year-old Charlotte enjoyed riding horses. “I asked her how the children were and she said Charlotte is really enjoying her riding which is great to hear and I said we may see her here on a line-up in 20 years' time,” Baker shared of their chat. "She emphasized that Charlotte has this passion for horses and although she doesn’t echo it, she’ll do her best to champion and encourage it."

Together with her parents and her two brothers, little Princess Charlotte seems to be getting into the Christmas spirit. On December 11th, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their three children to watch a Christmas pantomime play, and it marked the kids’ first red carpet event, PEOPLE reports. Although Princess Charlotte is surely taking wonderful qualities from both of her parents, she is developing her own unique spirit.

The cheeky princess was seen refusing to hold her dad’s hands as they walked on the red carpet toward the Palladium, and in the summer of 2019, she was spotted sticking her tongue out at the crowd at The King's Cup regatta. According to Harper's Bazaar, Charlotte also caused quite the stir when she barred photographers from attending her little brother Prince Louis’ Christening. “You’re not coming!” the fierce Princess reportedly said to the paparazzi. In this, she is echoing a bit of her grandmother's, Princess Diana's, fierce and free spirit.

Princess Diana always did things her own way

When she was alive, Princess Diana used to notoriously break royal protocols. She was the first woman in the royal family who chose not to say she will "obey" her husband Prince Charles during their wedding vows. All the generations before Diana followed the royal tradition of saying it, however, Diana was the first to break it, and years later when her sons got married their wives chose not to say it either.

Diana’s free spirit was evident in the way she would bond with Prince William and Prince Harry. She was known for being a fun parent, taking Harry and William to theme parks and on roller coaster rides, participating in their sports days in school, and even taking them to McDonald’s.

According to mom.com, Darren McGrady, former chef for the royal family, told Marie Claire that she would often take the boys to the American fast-food restaurant.

"I remember the princess came into the kitchen one day and said, 'Cancel lunch for the boys I'm taking them out, we're going to McDonald's,'" McGrady shared. "And I said, 'Oh my God — your Royal Highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.' And she said, 'No, it's the toy they want.'"
