Back in 2010, a sixth-grade student with great potential and an even greater voice uploaded a video of himself singing “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga. The video was not an instant hit, but it began circling the web and made its way to the world of entertainment. Finally, the video picked up traction and went viral, amounting to millions and millions of views. Now, that fresh-faced student has grown up to become a star in his own right.

Greyson Chance was born on Aug. 16, 1997, in Wichita Falls, Texas, and grew up in Oklahoma. He began playing piano at a very young age and took lessons to perfect his craft. On top of that, Chance discovered that he had a beautifully unique singing voice and decided to show off his passion for music by entering school talent shows and uploading videos of himself performing online.

It wasn’t long before his 2010 cover of “Paparazzi” made its way to the mainstream world and went viral, with Chance’s original songs also gaining an impressive amount of traction. Soon enough, his videos gained the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, and Chance was invited to be a guest on her show and perform on it as well.

Chance was even signed by DeGeneres to her record label eleveneleven, which was founded in 2010 in association with Warner Bros. and distributed by Interscope Geffen A&M.

Afterward, Chance embarked on a career in the music industry but later ended up taking a break before jumping back in on his own terms. However, in 2022, he reflected on the video that started it all.

In October 2010, Chance released his debut single, “Waiting Outside the Lines,” with his debut studio album, “Hold On ‘til the Night,” coming out the following summer. Chance continued making more music, releasing extended plays and full-length albums. He has even embarked on new career opportunities as he will make his film debut in the 2023 movie “Maybelline Prince.”

Still, it’s hard to forget where it all started, as Chance played piano and sang “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga for a school music festival. The video went viral and now has over 71 million views.

In 2019, Chance spoke with DeGeneres on her talk show about his career, which started when he was 12 years old. Once he reached 18 years old, he decided to leave Los Angeles and go to college but ultimately made his way back to La La Land and the music scene. “Let’s go back and let’s do it but let’s do it on my terms this time,” Chance recalled.

He opened up about coming out to his family when he was 16 before publicly coming out at the age of 19. A fan had actually reached out to tell Chance about his struggles with coming out, but that his music was inspiring, and from that point on, Chance knew that it was the right time to share his story.

In April 2022, Chance reflected more on his career through an Instagram post. He said he “tried to distance” himself from “being labeled as ‘the paparazzi kid,’” since he has completely changed since then.

Chance thanked his fans for sticking by his side through it all, as he concluded:

“I am so humbled to still be here. this viral moment will live on the internet forever, and i’ve now reached a point where im happy that’s the case.”
