Prince Harry Reveals He Wants His Father King Charles III 'Back' Despite Their Issues

In February 2024, it was revealed that King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer. The public is well aware that Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, haven't had the best father-and-son relationship due to the issues they faced within the royal family. But although Harry doesn't have the best relationship with Charles, he once said he still wanted his father back.

Nevertheless, the Duke of Sussex knew at an early age that he had been sidelined within his own family. The prince was born on Sept. 15, 1984, and in his book titled “Spare,” he recalled that when he was 20 years old, he found out his father allegedly made a shocking comment to his late mom, Princess Diana.

“Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an Heir and a Spare — my work is done,” the then-Prince Charles allegedly told his wife at the time, in reference to William and Harry.

Although Harry clarified in his memoir that he “took no offense” and “felt nothing about” the comment that his father allegedly made, he decided not to follow in the same footsteps as Charles.

"I'd resolved not to become my father. He'd been an older dad, and I'd always felt that this created problems, placed barriers between us,” he wrote.

Even though the father-and-son royals have had a strained relationship, there were still moments when the king helped his son and his wife out. In the documentary titled “Harry & Meghan,” Meghan revealed that having King Charles as her father-in-law was very important for her because she had “lost” her dad.

King Charles III accompanied Meghan down the aisle during her wedding to Prince Harry.

“I asked him to walk me down the aisle and he said yes. The whole thing was surreal. It was at that moment I could see H,” she said, as reported by Yahoo.

In addition, Prince Harry also noted that his father helped them choose an orchestra for their special day and it “made all the difference.”

The issues between Prince Harry and King Charles further ignited when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to step back from their duties as senior members of the royal family. They later moved to the United States to start their family.

Regardless of their differences, Harry still loves his family as he said in an interview with the Guardian: "I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back."

After Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022, King Charles III ascended to the throne and it was celebrated around the world. Among the people who celebrated the big milestone was Prince Harry, who attended his coronation, however, his wife and children were missing from the big event. Months prior to the coronation, Prince Harry opened up about the possibility of reconciling with his family.

"There's a lot that can happen between now and then… But you know, the door is always open. The ball is in their court… There is a lot to be discussed and I really hope that they are willing to sit down and talk about it,” he said, as reported by Sky News.

Following the death of Prince Philip in April 2021, it was believed that King Charles III possibly planned to leave out one of his sons and daughter-in-law in his future monarchy plans. When Queen Elizabeth II became a widow, Charles took on more responsibility to help relieve her of some of her duties.

According to royal biographer Angela Levin, Charles planned to “ditch” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the royal family. During an interview with talkRADIO in 2021, Levin addressed the “long-held plan to cut the size of the firm down.” She also explained how Charles and the late queen seemed to have different ideas on what to do regarding the future of the royal family.

“Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer,” Levin said. She followed up with her opinion on what that meant for Charles’ plans. "I imagine that might be when Harry and Meghan are ditched from being members of the royal family," she said.

In February 2024, it was announced by the palace that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer, which came after he underwent surgery for an enlarged prostate. People Magazine reported that Prince Harry arrived in the United Kingdom after the news, but his wife and children stayed at home in California.

Although it’s unclear what the Prince and his father talked about when Harry visited Charles, the prince told “Good Morning America” that he was “grateful” to see his father.

"I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane, go and see him, and spend any time with him – I'm grateful for that,” he said, as reported by USA Today.

Meanwhile, a source close to the royal family told People, "That is good," in reference to Harry's visit. "Hopefully (Harry) will bring the grandchildren at some point too, as that would be lovely for all of them."
