Matthew McConaughey’s Mom Was "Not Happy In The Least" When He Said He & Camila Alves Were Expecting Their 1st Child

If you follow Matthew McConaughey on social media, it is obvious that he is a big mama’s boy. The popular actor and director is known for his sizzling good looks and humor on the screen. What many people may not know is how much he loves his mom.

Matthew has said multiple times that he would not be where he is today without the love and support of his wonderful mother. It is easy to see where Matthew got his good looks when you see a picture of the beautiful Kay McConaughey. Matthew is practically his mother’s mini-me.

Born Matthew David McConaughey, the actor’s career took off when he starred in the film “Dazed and Confused” in 1993. He went on to have a successful job in the entertainment industry as he later starred in movies such as “The Wedding Planner,” “Failure to Launch,” “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” and many more. 

Regarding his personal life, Matthew is married to fashion model Camila Alves. She was born in Brazil and stayed in her home country until she was 15.

Later on, she went to Los Angeles, California, to visit her aunt and decided to stay in the United States. By the time she was 19 years old, she had moved to New York City in hopes of getting a career in the fashion industry as a model, but things weren’t easy at first as she had to balance her side hustles as a waitress and cleaner.

Although the couple looked happy since they established a loving family, things weren’t great at first especially when Matthew’s mom found out about Camila’s pregnancy; read on below how she reacted to the news.

Matthew McConaughey is a loving father to three children as of 2023, all of whom he shares with his wife Camila Alves. 

Years before he amassed a massive success in Hollywood, Matthew had a tough childhood, and he noted in an interview with Willie Geist on Sunday Today in 2020 that the way his parents disciplined him and his siblings might be a form of abuse, but he looked at it differently.

“I was scared at the moment, but even then and immediately after that, I didn’t ever question the love that Mom and Dad had or the love that they gave us,” he recalled.

Most of the important details of his life are detailed in his memoir titled “Greenlights,” which is based on his diary entries that span over three decades.

“I tell these stories that are bloody and ugly and sometimes violent,” he said. “And I think the reason I tell them is that those were times where the love that we had — that was never in question — was most challenged, but never had a chance of being beat,” he said.

He also opened up about his childhood in an excerpt reading in an episode of the online talk show “Red Table Talk,” where he said: “There was nothing fictitious about the love though, the love was real. Bloody sometimes, but never in question.”

One example of a tragic story that happened to him was back when he and Camila revealed the news of their pregnancy to Kay McConaughey as detailed in the book.

Initially, Kay was happy because she was going to hear “good news,” but when she found out that Camila was pregnant, she became silent.

When Kay spoke, she was frantic, as an excerpt from the book reads, “Matthew! This is out of order!... I raised you to get married before you had a baby!” the actor recalled what his mom said.

“This is all wrong, Matthew. This is not how I raised you, and I’m sorry, Camila, but this is not how I raised my son. I am not happy in the least,” he added in the memoir.

Kay hung up the phone, and both Camila and Matthew were shocked by what they heard.

When Matthew started dating Camila in 2006, it seemed like Kay was also strict with her, as she mentioned in an episode of the “Biscuits & Jam” podcast in August 2023. As reported by Entertainment Tonight, his mother first tested her.

“She did all these things when I first came in the picture… She was really testing me. I mean, really testing me. She would call me by all of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends’ names, she would start speaking Spanish with me in a very broken way, kind of putting down a bit. I mean, all kinds of stuff,” Camila recalled experiencing back in the day.

However, Matthew confirmed in a follow-up interview with ET Canada that the reason why his mom did that was because it was a form of initiation.

“My family is big on rites of passage and initiation, and you don’t get into the McConaughey family easily… We test you,” he said.

It appeared that Camila and Kay’s past was all water under the bridge now as he added that his wife broke his mom’s mean streak.

“Camila goes, ‘I’m not asking your permission anymore.’ And basically, my mom was like, ‘There we go. That’s right,’” he explained.
