After years of companionship, an older pair of African lions at the LA Zoo named Hubert and Kalisa was euthanized together so they wouldn’t have to live apart.

We all have that one soulmate. This is the person who loves us unconditionally, was made to complete our personality, and be our right-hand person. While not everyone has met their soulmate yet, there is someone out there who is the perfect match for you. It seems like this ideology transcends into the animal kingdom, too.

The LA Zoo and Botanical Gardens had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize this lion couple of six years at the same time. Illness and health issues that were related to their age made it difficult to keep them happy and comfortable on a regular basis.

According to Los Angeles Times, despite their magnificent grandeur and intense love, the quality of life for these two lions began diminishing quickly. So, the zoo staff was forced to make a difficult decision in a limited amount of time. Always seeing the two lions together, the question arose how one would cope without the other and if it would be more harmful to leave one of them all alone without their partner.

A Difficult Decision Made with the Best Intentions

Living longer in captivity than most others do, lions Hubert and Kalisa had experienced a good life together. When it came time to ease their pain and suffering, the animal care and veterinary staff had to make the difficult decision on how to handle the separation of this iconic big cat duo, CNN said.

Ultimately, it was decided that the 21-year-old elderly lions should be euthanized together. The hardship they would face in lieu of losing their loved-one combined with their old age would make it difficult for them to thrive without each other.

An Ode to Their Lives

In an effort to remember these two magnificent, powerful animals, the zoo put together a slide show to reminisce their life together at the LA Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Always by each other's side, showing attention and affection, Hubert and Kalisa will not soon be forgotten by zoo staff or visitors. This notorious duo was a favorite at the zoo, and they will be deeply missed. However, we can say the decision to allow these two to rest together in peace was made with the utmost caution and love.
