Young Woman Receives Backlash For Stating She’s ‘Too Pretty’ To Work The Rest Of Her Life

In real life, sarcasm might be one of the most difficult social conventions that many people struggle to understand. Since conveying sarcasm requires one’s wit and play of words, it is often misconstrued by many people to be the actual thing that one person is trying to express. 

For different generations, the use of sarcasm in everyday situations may vary. But especially for Generation Z, people born between 1997 to 2012, their humor is often mixed with sarcasm, which makes it rather difficult for older generations to comprehend. 

TikTok influencer Lucy Welcher got the heat of the internet after posting a now-viral video of herself expressing her innermost thoughts while slurping her iced coffee. 

“I do not want to work for the rest of my life. Does it look like I want to get up at 6 a.m. every f**king day for the next 60 years? No! I’m too pretty for that!” she said in the nine-second clip she posted on her TikTok account last Nov. 8, 2022. 

Per Daily Star UK, the video was captioned pretty straightforwardly: “Not my thing [laughing emoji] #working #scam.”

However, the video was taken down shortly after due to the negative comments she received. 

Among the things that people called her were “lazy,” “privileged,” and “entitled.

“Someone’s entitled. I hope you get humbled girl; you need it. Looks have to nothing to do with working, and it’s sad you have that mentality,” a user commented. 

“How about trying to be an adult instead of a privileged princess expecting life to be handed to you?” another posted. 

Barraged with the negative comments and backlash on her statements, Welcher seemed to be unbothered, and she reposted the video again on her TikTok account a week later. 

On Nov. 15, 2022, Welcher reuploaded the same video. In her caption of the said video, she explicitly added hashtags that would pretty much categorize the type of video she just posted, namely #relatable, #work, and #joke – implying that it was only a relatable work joke rant she does on her car.  

At the time of its original posting on Nov. 8, 2022, the internet and the comment section were unrelenting in their comments and criticisms of Welcher; but now, she received a rather warmer response, with more people agreeing to her sarcastic rant. 

“Why is everyone hating like its true why would anyone enjoy waking up at 6am just to make someone else rich,” someone asked. 

“I really don’t understand why this was so hated. Who tf wants to wake up at 6am and work the rest of their life? Maybe its your “pretty” comment,” another user echoed. 

“As long as you aren’t hurting anybody, use whatever you’ve got to live your best life. Some don’t have the option so are jealous,” one shared. 

In an earlier separate video, Welcher, in a very Gen-Z move, took the time to even rate the mean tweets she received because of her controversial TikTok video. 

She poked fun at comments that were even a little below the belt, comparing her eyebrows to a ramp and likening her to Humpty Dumpty, among others. 

Welcher revealed that those comments were some of her “favorites” that she had read; however, she had also received death threats and messages telling her to die.
