If you’ve ever watched auditions for competition-based reality shows, you know that sometimes one contestant stands out from the rest. Sometimes it’s their amazing vocal ability, sometimes it’s their touching story, and sometimes it’s both traits combined. When one young female singer entered the stage for her audition, it was clear that she was going to be the stand-out contestant of the bunch.

Lauren Engle, a 27-year-old with lots of amazing vocal ability, stepped onto the stage nervously. Her brother-in-law was ready and waiting next to her to perform guitar while she sang. But the judges weren’t ready for what they were about to hear. Lauren is a widow, and she came to the auditions to perform a song she had written with her late husband in mind.

“Last year, I was involved in a terrible car accident with my husband,” Engle told the judges of American Idol. “Losing him made me realize that I have nothing else to do but to keep doing music…and to honor him.”

Her husband was taken away far too soon in a destructive car accident, and it’s clear that Lauren uses music to channel and release her feelings of trauma and despair that she undoubtedly suffers after the accident. Lauren had met her husband at a young age during a friend's Halloween party

The two bonded over their love of music, and Lauren carries him with her today while she writes and performs music. She told the judges that her husband would play guitar for her to sing along to. The pair got married in 2014 and had date nights every single Sunday. But during one of their date nights, the fatal car accident occurred after someone ran a red light into their vehicle.

Lauren recalled the horrific accident with the judges, bearing her entire soul to the panel. Once she began singing, everyone was overwhelmed with emotion. Her song that she wrote was called ‘Compass,’ and she considers it a timeline of the life she spent with her late husband.

The judges were holding back tears as she sang the emotional and haunting tune. When Lauren completed her amazing original song, the judges praised her for her sheer vocal ability and raw emotion. Obviously, Lauren was chosen to move onto the next round of judging, a decision that brought her to tears herself.

It’s clear that Lauren will be a stand out contestant throughout the season. What do you think about her original song? Let us know in the comments and pass this along to your friends and family so they don't miss out.
