A tragedy is inspiring a young mother to spread awareness about the dangers of being positive for herpes while pregnant.

Kira Aldcroft is making it her mission to warn other parents about the importance of being tested for the herpes virus. The 22-year-old from Prestwich, Greater Manchester, in England is reeling after losing her son when he was only ten days old.  Aldcroft had done all that she could to give her son, Leo, the best start in life.

According to the Manchester Evening News, she enjoyed a normal pregnancy, and Leo was born nine days prematurely on August 9, 2018. Although Leo appeared healthy after birth, his life took a tragic turn just eight days later.

After he began bleeding from the mouth, Leo's mom rushed him back to the hospital where doctors suspected that he was suffering from sepsis. Baby Leo was put into a medically-induced coma before doctors realized that Aldcroft had unknowingly passed the Herpes HSV2 virus onto her newborn son.

This form of genital herpes can be passed on to babies during standard vaginal deliveries. Because it can remain dormant for years, Aldcroft had no idea that she even carried the virus.

Doctors did all that they could to save little Leo's life. However, as his organs began to fail, Aldcroft was forced to make the heartbreaking decision to turn off the life support for her precious son.

Aldcroft is now using her platform to encourage pregnant women to make sure that they are tested for the herpes virus prior to delivery so that the appropriate measures can be taken to prevent another tragedy like this.

She even created a petition which at the moment has been signed by over 2,500 people. The goal of the petition is to prevent neonatal herpes by implementing mandatory herpes tests for all pregnant women across the UK.

This touching video should be watched by everyone and then spread around so that another baby does not suffer this terrible fate. So feel free to pass it on to your friends and drop a comment with your thoughts on the tragedy.
