Matthias Nebel does this with ease on a 2018 episode of Germany's version of the popular television program The Voice, The Voice of Germany. For his audition, Nebel chose the famous ballad by Bon Jovi called Bed of Roses.

From the moment the song begins, it is obvious that the judges are already emotionally invested in the performance. As Nebel digs deep to reach the highest parts of the song, two judges even instantly hit their buttons in a bid to be the coach of this amazing belter. The remaining two judges were not far behind in their decision to advance Nebel to the next round. They were so in awe of Nebel’s performance that two of them even started literally rolling on the ground like excited puppies.

As all four judges pushed their buttons, Nebel's fellow band members, stepbrother, and father all celebrated the special moment. Michael Patrick Kelly ends up being Nebel's coach, a fitting pair considering that Kelly is a huge Bon Jovi fan.

Nebel’s audition is currently The Voice of Germany’s second most viewed one on their YouTube channel, only four million views behind the top viewed one. The video has also been decorated with over a whopping 11,000 comments, both in German and in English, praising Nebel as a powerhouse of a musician. “I never get tired of coming back to watch this,” one of the top comments read. “Best audition ever.”

Bed of Roses

The 1993 hit song by Bon Jovi was written by Jon Bon Jovi in a hotel room. Although the band had emerged onto the scene as a metal band, this song gave the band a more mature vibe, proving that they had a depth to their music.

According to songfacts.com, Jon was badly hungover from a night of drinking while he wrote the song. His mental state triggered all the strong emotions which fueled his inspiration for the song, exposing the problems he was struggling with at the time. It was also perfect that there was a piano in his hotel room.

The “mistress” he mentions in the song is actually a metaphor for the music industry and the live stage, and the “spotlight” is in reference to the media. Jon explains that while this “mistress” is fun and a thrill, it is not what is good and right for him. The song would become a staple in the band’s setlist for years.

A seasoned performer

Nebel is no stranger to the stage. The lifeguard and community servant spends a lot of his free time touring Austria with his rock band. If you missed his performance on The Voice of Germany, now is your chance to watch it in all of its glory.

He did not win but managed to make it as far as a semifinalist. He was eliminated after receiving the least amount of votes among two other competitors at 19.8% for his performance of Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball. His coach Kelly, however, ended up being the winning coach of the season. Fans of Nebel and viewers of the show alike took to the comments section to express their disappointment with the song selection for Nebel, saying that the pop hit did not flatter Nebel’s natural rocker pipes. “This song choice is awful, not at all good-suited for him,” one person wrote in the comments. “He killed the chorus and the high notes though.” Others even said that the song his coach chose for Nebel was what cost him the advancement.

One person wrote: “WT*! Why this song? He is a rocker! Now I understand why he isn't through to the finals! Such a pity! He is and was the best! This doesn't even sound like Matthias anymore! Matthias: you will get your record deal and if there's an album I will buy it. Lots of love from Holland!” Many who read the comment seemed to agree with it, giving their own two cents about the song choice in the replies.

He makes a comeback

Two years later, Nebel auditioned yet again. This time, for the tenth season of The Voice of Germany, also known as the anniversary season of the show. He was one of 10 all-star contestants that were asked back to the show. This time, he sang Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times, and he was even dressed like the British singer. According to Wikipedia, Nebel was 28 years old at the time.

Once again, his incredible vocal prowess got all of the judges to turn their chairs around. Two of them turned theirs just after hearing Nebel sing the first couple of lines of the song. Since its posting to YouTube just a couple of months ago in November 2020, Nebel’s audition video has garnered close to 1.5 million views currently, an impressive number, but nowhere near the view count of his first audition video, at 40.2 million as of today, January 3rd, 2021.

For the show’s semifinals back in December 2020, Nebel sang Bryan Adam’s Heaven. Despite the positive feedback he received from the judges for his performance, he lost out to teammate Paula Dalla Corte by 20% of the votes.

Viewers of the show have described Nebel as being underrated and that they do not understand how he is not yet a global superstar. One person says that if Nebel were born in a different time, he would have been “world-class famous.” “Born in the wrong decade. He would have been world-class famous if he performed during the '80s,” the viewer wrote. “He's got all the vibes, the looks, the charisma, and the voice of a classic rockstar.”

After you have watched Nebel rock the stage, let us know what you thought about his performance! Be sure to spread this amazing video to all Bon Jovi fans out there!
