Young Boys Aged 7 And 9 Perform CPR On Their Grandmother, Saving Her Life

Staying calm when under pressure is difficult for everyone. It is remarkable to see this ability in two young children.

Patti Chatterson is a grandmother of two boys who are seven and ten years of age. Patti always knew her grandsons were intelligent boys but even she might be surprised by the poise they showed during a recent emergency.

The 62-year-old Chatterson was watching a movie one recent evening with her grandsons when her heart stopped beating. The trio had just finished dinner and Patti was seated in her recliner when she suffered a cardiac arrest.

Grayson, Patti's seven-year-old grandson, Grayson, turned to ask her a question and saw immediately there was a problem. Patti explains she was told by her grandsons her mouth was open and gurgling sounds came from her throat.

The two boys acted quickly. The first call was to their mother who was unable to answer. The boys then dialed 911.

Grayson handed the phone to his older brother once the 911 operator was on the line. Grayson then checked the pulse of his grandmother and held his hand under her nose to see if he could feel her breathing. He felt nothing. Kian relayed this information to the dispatcher.

The dispatcher instructed the boys to place their grandmother on the floor. The boys worked as a team with Kian performing chest compressions on his grandmother while Grayson administered mouth to mouth.

Paramedics arrived on the scene seven minutes after the ordeal began. Patti explains the defibrillator was used four times by medical personnel in efforts to save her life.

Patti Chatterson did not wake up until four days later. She has no memory of the events leading up to her cardiac arrest. She also has no memory of the aftermath. She is thankful, however, for the life-saving actions of her grandchildren.

Both Patti and the boys' mother are nurses. The two women are responsible for teaching the boys the life-saving techniques. Their mother specifically taught them to perform CPR not long before Patti's ordeal. Patti is happy to be home and is healing from her wounds. She was outfitted with an internal defibrillator to guard against future stoppages of her heart.

The entire situation is a bit of the shock to Patti who frequently spends time outdoors with her grandsons. She has also been healthy and is an avid gym goer. The boys are happy there grandmother is with them but they do not truly understand the heroism they displayed.

Patti says the older brother feels bad because he heard her sternum crack during chest compressions. Grayson seems to have a greater appreciation for the presence of his grandmother. He told her directly he is not finished spending time with her.
