When Noah Cantin first saw a police officer sitting alone at a restaurant, he just wanted to talk to him. After his nerves prevented that, though, Noah instead performed an act of kindness that would resonate across the internet.

Nine-year-old Noah was enjoying breakfast with his mother, Amanda Cantin, at a local Denny’s, when he spied a police officer sitting, alone, at a table across the restaurant. Noah turned to his mother, excited, wanting to know whether he could go say hi to the officer, Eddie Benitez.

For the past four years, Noah had wanted nothing more than to grow up to be a police officer, himself.

Amanda, of course, said yes. Before he reached Officer Benitez, though, Noah became nervous and froze. He simply couldn’t think of what to say. After talking to his mother, he decided to pay the officer’s breakfast tab, using his birthday money. Flagging down the waitress serving Officer Benitez, Noah paid for the officer’s coffee and Grand Slam breakfast. On the receipt, he wrote a note that his mother helped him compose, which read, “I want to be you when I grow up. Thank you for your service.”

Noah insisted on delivering the receipt, himself, walking shyly up to Officer Benitez. Amanda recalled his confusion, saying, “He didn’t understand why this little boy was walking down there with his tab. His face was very shocked.” Upon reading the note, though, Officer Benitez leaped quickly up from the table and asked to take a picture with Noah. That picture would later make its way to the Lakeland Police Department Facebook page, including a heartfelt message for Noah.

“Well, Noah,” it read, “you touched all of our hearts, today. Your support means so much to all of the men and women who put on the uniform every day.”

Officer Benitez, who now carries the note with him, everywhere, said it meant everything to him. “It meant that I’m supposed to wake up every morning and put on this uniform and go out there and do what I do.”

Amanda said she’d be “one proud mom,” if Noah chose to become a cop. We think so many would be! Do you know someone who could be cheered by Noah's story?
