A story about a courageous female police officer saving a depressed boy has gone viral and with good reason. Sometimes, you just don't have the moments to spare. You stay calm, move fast, and try and do the right thing.

Officer Jessie Ferreira Cavallo, 28, was on her way to work for the village of Hastings-on-Hudson in New York when she saw a young boy on the overpass. He jumped, and she immediately parked her car, grabbed some emergency supplies and took off. Her adrenaline was on fire, she told USA Today.

She jumped over right after him, never considering the 30-foot drop.

She found the 12-year-old boy lying on the ground bleeding. Officer Cavallo knew she had to help him and fast. A woman dressed in a military uniform saw the situation and quickly got out to assist. The child was suffering from a broken leg, arm, and nose.

Police in Westchester County reported that the boy was taken to the hospital. The women were able to place a neck brace and splint on the injured child. He was alive and opened his eyes, but Office Cavallo said he was not responding.

According to authorities, the boy was staying at a mental health facility in Yonkers, NY, when he ran away from the campus. The Andrus Center is known for helping kids dealing with very serious emotional, behavioral and mental health issues. Members from the facility were talking to the youth when he jumped.

Meantime, Officer Cavallo, a police officer for seven years now, was still trying to process the event 24 hours later. She knew the overpass was a high one but felt she could jump it.

Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Peter Swiderski was proud of Cavallo's bravery and fast thinking as she leaped off the overpass. He said the community and the boy's parents are forever grateful to her.

Officer Jessie Ferreira Cavallo has received six lifesaving awards. She's something else.

It's no mystery why this story has gone viral, so keep passing it along.
