The lion is one of the most revered animals in the histories of many cultures. It is commonly associated with royalty, power, and leadership. The lion is especially significant in China, where it is depicted in art and in palaces and temples.

A sculptor from China decided to recreate this magnificent animal from a large tree. It would end up taking him three years and 20 people, but the end result is incredible.

Dengding Rui Yao, a sculptor from China, was commissioned to make a massive sculpture out of a huge redwood trunk according to My Modern Met.  He led the way in carving a ginormous lion out of a single tree trunk. He had a team of 20 people to help him out in the carving and sculpting of this gigantic trunk. The major work began in Myanmar. In December 2015, the sculpture was complete. The name given to the fierce and beautiful sculpture of a lion is "Oriental Lion."

The magnificent sculpture had its residence in Myanmar for a temporary period. After some time, the sculpture was transported to Wuhan, China. The transportation itself was a feat on its own, traveling 3,000 miles to Wuhan. The Oriental Lion is not simply a tourist attraction in China, but also a record in the history of statues.

It is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest redwood sculpture in the world. Its dimensions reach 47.5 feet in length, 16.5 feet in height, and 13 feet in width. Getting close to the sculpture will reveal to you a startling precision and detail in the creating of this beautiful lion. The whiskers, the mane, the dropping teeth, and everything about this lion is created to look as realistic as it can be.

This sculpture holds symbolic meaning to the Chinese people. In the local folklore and legends, the lion is the protector and guardian of the people from evil spirits. The monument is currently stationed in the heart of China in the capital city of the Hubei Province.

Typically for the region, most of the temples and palaces there can be seen decorated with lion sculptures at the entrances. If you have no plans to visit Chia in person anytime soon, you can always look at the photos of this amazing work of art.
