Synchronized ice skating is a sport that involves athletes moving in perfect harmony with each other to execute flawless moves across the ice. In a normal routine, between 8 and 16 skaters move together as a unit over the ice. One team of ice skaters from Russia gave a stunning performance during the 2013 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championship that is absolutely worth viewing.

When the sport first came onto the scene in the 1950s, it was known as "precision skating." The first known performance happened in 1956 as the halftime entertainment during a hockey game at the University of Michigan. The routine resembled a cheerleading performance on the ice.

Dr. Richard Porter formed the first official synchronized skating routine, earning him the distinction of being known as the Father of Synchronized Skating. The sport really took off in the 70s, becoming popular all over the world.

The sport is essentially a ballet on ice. The performers must put in hours and hours of practice to get each move perfect. Not only do they need to master their own moves, but they also need to work together as a team to make sure that they have perfect synchronization.

There is no room for error once the performers take to the ice. However, when executed flawlessly, it is beautiful to watch.
