Woman Wonders Whether To Feel Guilty For Getting Cashier In Trouble, Asks Internet If She Was At Fault

Showing proof of age is something that most people have gotten used to whenever they buy liquor, cigarettes or even certain medications. It’s a way to make sure people are safe and old enough to purchase these items. While many people hope to look young as long as possible, it can be somewhat of a downfall when it comes time to show your ID.

For one European woman, she found that having a unique birthday almost resulted in her losing her ID — and it may have even cost a cashier his job. The woman was born on Feb. 29, making her a “leapling.” According to PopSugar, about 5 million people around the world share this leap day birthday.

When the woman went to a local grocery store on a Wednesday morning in November 2021, she decided to buy some wine along with some cleaning supplies. When it came time to show her ID, the cashier by the name of Kevin deemed it fake. He reasoned that Feb. 29 was not a real day, so there was no way she could have been born then.

The situation quickly escalated, and Kevin threatened to destroy the woman’s ID. Finally, another worker stepped in to remedy the situation, asking the woman if she could fill out some paperwork explaining what happened that ultimately would get Kevin in trouble. The woman filled the paperwork out but felt guilty about it afterward, especially if Kevin were to lose his job over it. She turned to Reddit in November 2021 to ask users if she was the one at fault.

In her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) explained that she went to a store one morning to buy some wine, bleach and cat litter. “I have a permanent baby face so I’m always ready to give the ID, usually there isn’t a problem, the cashier just hands it back and I go on my merry way,” she said. However, this day went very differently.

When she got to the register, the cashier named Kevin thought she was too young to be buying wine and quickly asked for proof of age. The OP happily handed over her ID, but Kevin told her that it was fake and even threatened to call the security guard over. The OP was confused as it was her real ID, but Kevin reasoned that February only had 28 days, not 29, so there was no way that she was born on Feb. 29 like her ID stated.

The OP said, “Excuse me but February has 29 days every four years, and I need my ID back.” Kevin replied, “No, I’m destroying this, now get out.” Kevin started walking away to go to the staff room with the intention of cutting the OP’s ID when a female noticed the commotion.

While Kevin told the other worker that the OP was trying to purchase items using a fake ID, the OP continued to state that her ID was real and begged for it to be returned. When the other worker tried to reason that leap years are real, Kevin called it a myth. Fortunately, she was able to take the ID away from Kevin and hand it back to the OP.

Feeling Guilty

The worker explained that she would have a stern talk with Kevin and made sure the OP was able to purchase everything she needed. She also asked if the OP would be willing to sign a paper documenting everything that Kevin did. She made it clear that Kevin had a past of bothering customers. The OP was confused, but she still signed the statement.

When she got home and explained the situation to her roommate, the OP started to feel guilty as her roommate pointed out that she might have just been the reason why Kevin got fired “for a very minor thing.” He even said it was her fault for having a confusing birthday.

The OP turned to Redditors for their advice and was overwhelmed by the number of nice comments. Redditors pointed out that Kevin handled the situation very poorly and also mentioned that the other worker was most likely his supervisor.

One user commented, “If Kevin gets fired it will be entirely because of his actions and you do not need to feel in any way guilty about it.” Another user agreed, saying, “If he gets fired it’s because he’s done many similar things, not just this.” A third Redditor said, “You don’t have a confusing birthdate and it wasn’t a very minor thing.”

In an update, the OP said that she found out that Kevin and her roommate are actually friends. She’s currently staying with her boyfriend until she feels less anxious around her roommate. She also wasn’t sure if Kevin still had his job or not.
