The internet is never short of opinions, but sometimes, people blur the line between sharing their thoughts and straight-up bullying or being mean to others. This happened to food, fashion and fitness blogger Jacqueline Adan, who uses her platform to discuss issues such as health, self-love, skin removal and body positivity.
Having previously weighed 500 pounds, the internet personality has since had a dramatic weight loss, shedding 350 pounds. Although she still had loose skin after her weight loss, Adan was excited to finally go out and enjoy herself on vacation. Instead, she had to deal with insensitive bullies. The influencer shared her experience with online bullying while she was vacationing in Mexico on Instagram. She preempted the story by disclosing that she hadn’t worn a bathing suit in a long time, even longer without a cover-up. She recalled being nervous about exposing her body before she even left for the beach.
“I was nervous to take my cover up off and to walk into the pool or walk on the beach. I still felt like that same 500 pound girl,” she wrote.
Her experience quickly soured when strangers began teasing her before she even got into the pool. She recalled:
“A couple sitting by the pool started laughing and pointing at me and making fun of me as soon as I took my cover up off.”
However, she was adamant about not letting the haters ruin her vacation.
Instead of giving in to the body-shamers, Adan chose to enjoy her vacation and not let them ruin it. Although it hurt her feelings, she rose above it all and entered the pool.
“I took a deep breath, smiled and walked into the pool. That was a huge moment for me. I had changed. I was not the same girl anymore. Yes I still have a lot of loose skin, I may still feel insecure at times, and yes I may still get made fun of. To be honest, yes it bothered me,” she lamented.
She also shared her personal story and how her health journey has made her stronger in the face of bullying. Adan was diagnosed with advanced-stage lipedema, “a condition where fat tissue, known as adipose tissue, collects in an abnormal way under the skin.” She shared the best way she responds to bullying incidents, writing:
“I am not going to let what other people think of me stop me from living my life. They do not know me. They do not know how I have worked my a-- off to lose 350 pounds. They do not know how I am recovering from major surgeries. They have no right to sit and point and laugh at me. That’s why I smiled.”
Unfortunately, it happened again a year later, with critics laughing at and pointing out her supposed flaws after undergoing skin removal. She took to Instagram again to share her opinion on such people alongside several close-up photos of her legs.
“I do not depend on the approval of others, and I do not care what others may or may not think about my body,” she said.
