Woman With Incurable Breast Cancer Makes One of Her Greatest Dreams Come True

Amanda Barnes has spent the past several years learning that life can change with little warning.
The 49-year-old mother of two from Devon, England, first became concerned in October 2021, when she began experiencing hot and cold sensations and swelling in her left breast. She also discovered two grape-sized lumps under her left arm.
A November ultrasound came back normal. When Barnes continued feeling unwell, she underwent another ultrasound in March 2022, but again received normal results. A biopsy in June 2022 finally revealed stage 3 breast cancer.
The diagnosis was a “huge shock,” especially after the earlier tests had given her no clear answers.
“All those tests coming back ‘normal’ made me feel like I was a hypochondriac, like I might be imagining all these things that were happening to me,” she recalled.
Then came an even more devastating update. In October 2022, a PET scan showed that the cancer had spread to her spine, making it stage 4. Doctors told Barnes she might not live beyond March 2023.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It was awful being given a date, and that date has stuck with me, but here I am.”
Radiation therapy helped shrink the tumors on her spine, and Barnes continued making memories with her children, Connor, 20, and Ruby, 17, including traveling together. In March 2026, however, doctors discovered that the cancer had spread again, this time to her femur and hips. She began chemotherapy.
By July, Barnes was thinking about something she had wanted for much of her life. She wanted a wedding day.
With help from her family and friends, Barnes decided not to wait for circumstances to become perfect. On Aug. 16, she put on a white wedding dress and celebrated at the Islington Country-House hotel in Devon with 30 of her closest friends and family members.
There was no groom, but a ceremony of sorts built around everything Barnes wanted from the day: a lace off-the-shoulder dress with a sweetheart bodice, spa pampering, dinner and hours surrounded by people who loved her.
“There may not have been a groom, and that didn’t matter, because there was no shortage of love,” she said, per SWNS. “My family and friends pulled together to make something I’d always dreamed about actually happen.”
“I just wanted to fulfill one of my oldest and greatest dreams while I still could,” she added. Barnes called the day “absolutely fantastic.” “I did it,” she said. “I wore the most beautiful wedding dress and had a wonderful few hours full of love.”
Her friend Lucy captured the celebration and shared a video of the festivities on TikTok. It has since been viewed more than 10.5 million times. Barnes said she hopes the unexpected attention encourages people to stop postponing their lives.
“Take the trip. Wear the dress. Spend time with your children. Tell the people you love what they mean to you. Make the memory while you can,” she urged.
But just 10 days after her wedding celebration, Barnes received another devastating update: the cancer had spread to her brain and right eye, and she has since lost her sight in that eye.
She continues to receive chemotherapy and says she isn’t “ready to stop” fighting. Barnes has also set up a GoFundMe to help cover her mounting medical expenses.
“I’m still here, and I intend to keep living. I’m still determined to make every day count,” she said.
