Woman Wins $2 Million Lottery Jackpot on Lunch Break – Then Returns to Work Like Nothing Happened

For most people, a stressful day at work ends with a coffee break or a walk outside. For one Virginia woman, it ended with a $2 million lottery ticket.

The anonymous winner, from Portsmouth, Virginia, stopped at Love Food Mart in neighboring Norfolk during her lunch break after what she described as an especially difficult day on the job. Hoping a scratch-off ticket might lift her spirits, she purchased a ticket for the Virginia Lottery's "$2,000,000 Fortune" game.

She never imagined it would become one of the biggest moments of her life.

After scratching the ticket, she realized she had matched the winning symbols and claimed the game's top prize of $2 million.

The excitement, however, had to wait. Instead of celebrating, calling loved ones or immediately leaving work, she headed straight back to the office because her workday wasn't over.

"I had to go back to work and act like nothing happened," she told Virginia Lottery officials.

Imagine sitting through meetings, replying to emails and chatting with coworkers while secretly knowing you'd just won a multimillion-dollar prize.

The winner has chosen to remain anonymous, so no one knows exactly what that afternoon at work looked like—or whether any of her colleagues ever suspected something extraordinary had happened during her lunch break.

According to the Virginia Lottery, she bought the winning ticket at Love Food Mart in Norfolk, turning what began as an ordinary stop during a difficult workday into a life-changing moment she will likely remember forever.

But discovering she had won wasn't the only major decision she had to make.

Like all winners of the Virginia Lottery's top scratch-off prizes, she was given two choices for how to receive her winnings.

She could either accept the full $2 million prize through annual payments spread over 30 years or choose a one-time lump-sum cash payout. After weighing her options, she selected the immediate cash option, taking home $952,000 before taxes.

A recent change in Virginia law also made her decision to remain anonymous possible. According to the Virginia Lottery, legislation that took effect in July now allows winners of any prize amount to claim their winnings without publicly revealing their name, hometown or prize amount unless they choose to give written permission.

Previously, only lottery winners claiming prizes exceeding $10 million had the legal right to remain anonymous. Virginia now joins several other states—including Delaware, Kansas, Maryland and Oregon—that allow lottery winners to keep their identities private.

The "$2,000,000 Fortune" scratch-off game only launched on Sept. 1, and lottery officials say two additional top prizes are still waiting to be claimed.

While the odds of winning the $2 million jackpot stand at approximately one in 408,000, the overall odds of winning any prize in the game are one in 3.48.

For the anonymous winner, however, the most unforgettable part of the day may not have been scratching the winning ticket at all.

It was quietly returning to work, carrying on with the rest of her shift and pretending everything was completely normal – all while knowing she had just become nearly a millionaire before taxes during her lunch break.
