Wendi Williams was taking a flight from New Orleans to Charlotte, North Carolina when she had her interaction with an unnamed male passenger. Coming home from a teacher’s conference, Wendi reclined her seat only to be asked by the bearded male passenger in the last row to put her seat back up. From then on, he began to not only punch, but tap the back of her seat.

A passenger’s reaction to a woman who reclined her seat on an airplane has sparked debate online over who was in the wrong.

The man said that by lowering her seat, Wendi was impeding his ability to enjoy his meal. Speaking with reporters from Fox and Friends, Wendi said that she did as the man asked and put her seat back up. About 10 minutes later, when Wendi noticed that the man had finished eating, Wendi once again reclined her seat. That’s when the man behind her became started reacting, as reported by The Dallas Morning News.

After Wendi had reclined her seat a second time, the passenger behind her began punching and prodding her seat. At this point, Wendi began recording the incident on her phone. Speaking with Inside Edition in the video below, Wendi said that the passenger was hitting her chair so hard that it caused her to be knocked about in her seat several times.

The teacher adds that she has a fused vertebrae and needed to recline her seat to be able to sit comfortably. At one point during the video, the passenger asks Wendi, “What’s your problem?” as Wendi replies that she has none.

Wendi soon turned to a flight attendant for help but was shocked to find that the plane’s staff had sided with the passenger that was causing her such discomfort. Wendi got even angrier when the flight attendant handed her a passenger disturbance notice and threatened to have her removed from the plane.

After landing, Wendi posted her video of the encounter to social media, where it has become a viral hit and sparked debate over which passenger was in the right. Many people sided with Wendi, arguing that it was completely within her right to recline her seat back.

Others are not so sympathetic to Wendi. These commentators argue that Wendi violated the man’s space by reclining her chair.
