Kara Robinson Chamberlain was 15 on June 24, 2002, when a serial killer abducted her. In an interview conducted by Elizabeth Smart in 2018, Kara reveals that she was at her friend's house when the abduction occurred. The friends were preparing to go out to the lake when their mother asked if they could help her with some chores first. Chamberlain offered to help her out. A stranger then pulled into the driveway and offered her some brochures. On reaching out to get them, however, the man pulled a gun and pointed it to her neck instead. As Kara got into the stranger's vehicle, she knew her life was in danger.

Now, years later, Kara tells her story on social media in an effort to empower and educate others.

After she was kidnapped and taken to the kidnapper's house, she took her time to study the activities of the kidnapper in order to plan her escape. After laying out the plan, all she needed was to wait for the perfect moment. About 18 hours after she'd been abducted, she wiggled out and exited through the front door as the attacker slept. Once on the road, she stopped a motorist who agreed to help her. The two drove to the Sheriff's Department in Richland County where Kara recorded a statement. When the kidnapper was arrested, Kara realized that he had abducted and killed several of his victims. In fact, the FBI investigations stated that there was adequate evidence that Evonitz, the man who abducted her, was responsible for the murder of other people who had gone missing in the area under mysterious circumstances.

After the kidnapping, Chamberlain decided to not just be a survivor; she chose to thrive. In 2003, she started working with the Sheriff's Department to help empower past victims of kidnappings. After graduating from college, she decided to join the DNA lab. As a graduate from the police academy, Chamberlain specialized in investigating sexually motivated assaults and cases of children's abuse before going back to victim services. Years later, she left law enforcement to concentrate on raising her kids. This was before deciding to pursue a motivational speaking career. After her interview with Smart, Chamberlain revealed that she now works with five other survivors of kidnappings and sexual abuse.

She continues to use her experiences to empower other people by sharing her story. She is currently working on a documentary that will shed light on her abduction and help her jump-start her public speaking career. She decided to create a social media following and opened a TikTok account and started a challenge. She would film videos and share her story and answer questions to survivors. After her first challenge, the video went viral. Her next video shared her experiences, and she got a lot of support from then on.

Chamberlain continues to encourage the people who survive kidnappings and sexual assaults by inspiring them. After surviving a kidnapping by a serial killer as a 15-year-old, Chamberlain decided to use her experience to help others who may find themselves in the same circumstances. She uses her expertise on how to deal with trauma to help other victims heal and rebuild their lives.

As reported by Buzzfeed News, Kara states:

"Bad things can happen, but it's not the end of the world. We get to choose when something negative happens, do we let it destroy us or do we let it make us a stronger person?"

Do you think you would have found the same strength as Chamberlain, if you'd went through what she went through? Do you know anybody who went through something similar? Pass this story along to your friends to find out what they have to say.
