Laury Worsley from Kenilworth, UK, is sharing her joy with the world following the birth of her daughter Ivy. The 35-year-old, who was diagnosed with two seperate health conditions that deemed it extremely difficult to carry a child to full term, had suffered 13 miscarriages prior to her daughter’s birth.

Worsley had to follow a course of medication and steroids to undergo a pioneering fertility treatment which finally made it possible to have a child, 14 pregnancies later.

“Even now, nine months on, I can't believe she's actually mine.” She told BBC.

Worsley and her husband, Dave, suffered their first miscarriage back in 2008 but were advised to keep trying by their doctors. After suffering a fourth miscarriage, Worsley was finally diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome, a condition the NHS describes as “a disorder of the immune system that causes an increased risk of blood clots”, which has an increased risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.

“I don't know how I coped, to be honest,” said Worsley.  “It was all I lived for - I lost years of my life. I just thought, if I can't have a baby I don't see a point in my life.”

Following a tragic number of unsuccessful pregnancies, the now mother was also diagnosed with Histiocytic Intervillositis, “a placental lesion associated with recurrent reproductive loss” as described by the Baystate Medical Center.

“I wasn't sure I wanted to try again. But Professor Quenby said she had helped women with this successfully,” she told the BBC.  “I told myself, this is the last time I'm doing this.”

To strengthen the lining of her womb, Worsley had to follow a course of medication before conceiving her 14th child with Dave.

Professor Siobhan Quenby along with other fertility experts then prescribed steroids to Worsley in order to suppress her immune system in an attempt to reduce the number of cells that were causing the miscarriages. Alongside the steroids, the 35-year-old was also prescribed blood thinners in order to prevent further blood clots from forming.

In her 30th week of pregnancy, her water broke and she was rushed to the hospital. She delivered Ivy via Caesarian in late 2018, who weighed just 1.7 Lbs at time of birth. Three days later, the new proud parents were finally able to hold their baby daughter in their arms. The little girl also had to battle bronchiolitis when in hospital but was finally released to go home 11 weeks later.

“I look at her and think ‘miracles do happen,’” She said. “I'd read about other people's miracles, and now I've got mine.”

“Through my story, I want to give others the hope and strength to carry on even when things seem impossible.”
