The heart wants what it wants. Humans have a tendency to assign feelings of love to objects that touch a part of the human spirit but cannot return the feelings of affection. When it comes to pets, the story is quite different, especially with dogs that prove time and again they are indeed "man's best friend."

Back in 2013, Kameroun Mares was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. As a pick-me-up, she decided she would buy herself a puppy to keep her company while she was going through chemotherapy. Her dog of choice was a beautiful Siberian Husky. She names her new companion Semper Fidelis, which means "always faithful" in Latin.

One eventful day, she received a call from her then-roommate while on a road trip to California. Her roommate informed her that her companion had gone missing. Kameroun immediately began her search for the lost Semper Fidelis, posting information all over social media and contacting every animal shelter within miles of her home. Even after eventually relocating to California, she never gave up hope that her search would someday bear fruit.

Most of Kameroun's hopes hung on the fact she had a microchip inserted under Semper Fidelis' skin. If someone found the dog and thought to put him through a scanner, there was a chance they could identify the dog and might reach out to her with the dog's location. After many months of futility, Kameroun made the decision to contact a private investigator named Ana Campos.

Campos became particularly intrigued when she was informed the dog's microchip had been registered with an organization called AKC Reunite. It was through that organization that Campos discovered someone had registered their name to Semper's chip back in April of 2016. Through this find, Campos was able to get to the bottom of the story. It turns our Kameroun's roommate had stolen and sold the dog on or around April 11, 2016 for $200.

Kameroun was able to locate her dog's whereabouts but had to sue to regain custody. The story has a happy ending because a judge ruled in her favor. Two and one-half years after losing her heart and soul, Semper and Kameroun were finally reunited. In response to seeing her old friend again, Kameroun had this to say to The Dodo “I see him as an extension of myself and my heart. I am glad I have him back in my arms.”

You don't have to be a dog lover to see the beauty in this story. Let us know if you have ever experienced anything like this. You might also want to let family and friends experience the story as well.
