Alan Vandevander wandered into a Whole Foods Market looking for candy. However, little did he know that his search for sugar was going to change his life. Stephanie and Al Blackbird saw him holding a $5 bill with a desperate look on his face.

The Whole Foods Market was located in North Scottsdale, Arizona, which is an area inhabited by wealthy citizens. Stephanie and Al noticed that he kept staring at the expensive candy with a helpless look on his face.

Alan looked emaciated and malnourished. It was obvious that he needed food. The couple felt compassion for Alan. They bought him something to eat. Finally, Al and Stephanie left the store and went home. But they were unable to sleep. The following evening was Christmas Eve. The couple drove to the desert to try and find Alan.

Stephanie mentioned that they had spent more than 2 hours walking in the desert until they were ready to go home. Instead, they drove their car in a different direction and prayed to the Lord to help them locate Alan. They miraculously found him within a few minutes after saying their prayer.

They soon discovered that Alan had been living in the desert for two decades. Al and Stephanie gave him food and spent time talking to him. They told him that they would come back on the following day to bring him a special meal for Christmas. When the couple returned, Alan was unable to eat any food. They convinced him to admit himself to a local hospital. The doctor said that Alan was practically starving to death and extremely dehydrated. Plus, Alan had experienced a heart attack.

After Alan recuperated, he told the couple that he was a decorated Vietnam veteran who had received a purple heart. His mother died when he was a young child. His other family members residing in Indiana did not even know that he was still living. Stephanie did some detective work and located his relatives who were overjoyed to find him.

Alan is currently applying for benefits via the Veterans Benefits Administration. Plus, the Blackbirds are in the process of raising money so that Alan can rent his own apartment and pay for the things he needs. Stephanie and Al have pledged to help Alan until he no longer needs their assistance.
