Woman Underestimates The Intentions Of A stranger Outside Her Front Door After Receiving An Alert From Her Home Surveillance System

Those with door cams and other home surveillance systems can attest that there’s usually equal parts security and fright in seeing a stranger on video acting suspiciously around your property.

Those who’ve ever lost their wallet probably also know the dreadful feeling of having your personal information floating around for a stranger to find and the chaos of replacing money cards and IDs. Imagine having both happening to you on the same day. That’s what happened to Katie Egger Makris of Washington, D.C.

All Isn’t Always As It Seems

Take a look at this video first and see what your initial impression is of it. What would you think the man was up to doing?

Katie Egger Makris was setting up to teach her 6 a.m. workout class when she received an alert on her smartphone from her home security provider that someone was at her door. Knowing it was too early for deliveries and not expecting anyone, she was immediately suspicious and checked out the feed from her Ring camera.

A man in a hat, jeans, and plaid jacket stood at Katie’s door. He held an object in his hand, but it was still dark outside and was impossible to tell what the object might be from the angle and light.

In a latter Facebook post, Katie said that ring cam videos around this time of year in her neighborhood are typically about people jiggling car doors to see if they’re open, package thefts, break-ins, and so forth. So, she was suspicious about the strange man at her door, especially when he was seen rummaging around her mailbox and door.

He seemed to have left the object he had in hand and quickly left Katie’s property unharmed. Katie called her husband to go home and see what had happened and what the man had left behind. What her husband found was certainly unexpected.

What Katie didn’t know was that she had dropped her wallet in her rush to the gym that morning. The stranger in a van had found the wallet in the street, looked at the ID’s address, and come to leave it safely tucked underneath Katie’s door mat.

Katie took to Facebook to thank the stranger, calling herself “damn lucky” and that he’s what’s “right in the world.” She pointed out how returning a lost wallet is pretty much unheard of; if it’s lost, you typically loose not just the wallet and cash but everything in your accounts, too.

Katie’s video proves that all isn’t always as it seems. Sometimes random acts of kindness can bring strangers to your doorstep. What was your initial assumption in watching the video?
