Adopting a dog is an incredible thing. It’s wonderful knowing that you are rescuing a dog with no home and giving it a wonderful life of love, happiness, and, of course, lots of treats! However, it’s a fact in the world of adopting dogs that most people are looking for a bright-eyed, high energy puppy.

Older dogs are often overlooked by people wishing to adopt. Senior dogs of a certain age tend to have a lower energy level and they also can have more health issues that are natural as a dog ages, just like humans. Unfortunately, this is why senior dogs often don't get adopted.

However, adopting senior dogs can be a great practice. Dogs of a certain age often make incredible pets. That’s what Alice Mayn found out when she gave a senior dog her forever home. Alice adopted a beautiful golden retriever named Lily from a local shelter. Lily was 12 years of age at the time and she and Alice spent four wonderful months together when Alice saw her and immediately wanted to be Lily’s foster mom.

Lily was residing in a Sonoma County animal shelter in California. It was love at first sight for both Alice and for Lily. As soon as Lily saw Alice arrive at the shelter, Lily came right out of her kennel, walked up to Alice and gave her a little doggie kiss. Lily was known for her enthusiasm, joy, and charming everyone she came into contact with. She had several health issues, including a blood disorder, nasal infection, and she was prone to seizures.

The two spent a wonderful, loving four months together before Lily died peacefully in her sleep one night in 2008. However, Alice was determined to do something to cherish her time with Lily and to help people know how wonderful it can be to adopt a senior dog. The very next day Alice had a fantastic idea. She started a non-profit that had the sole purpose of helping to rescue older dogs and find loving homes for dogs like Lily. Of course, Alice decided to name the non-profit Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary.
