Recovering from her wounds and rebuilding her life was a long journey. But, Melissa came back stronger than she ever was before. According to People, Melissa was 20 years old at the time of the attack, living in Clearwater, Florida. Her attacker was her ex-boyfriend, Robert Lee Burton Jr., who was 22 at the time. He pled guilty to charges of attempted first-degree murder. For his crime, Judge Keith Meyer sentenced Burton to life in prison without parole.

In the midst of Melissa's journey to recovery, she had a chance encounter with Cameron, the paramedic that helped save her life.

The two had an instant bond. It was too long that they fell in love with each other.

Melissa has had to undergo a number of surgeries to help reconstruct her body and her face. She was left with deep cuts, missing teeth, and an eye that didn’t shut. She documented the journey to recovery on Facebook, always appreciating her family and friends for all their help. She highlighted her loyal pit bull, Dixie, and the man who finally stole her heart.

On top of her road to recovery, Melissa has graduated from college, become a nurse, and also becoming an advocate against domestic violence.

After her attacker's sentencing hearing, Melissa showed her ongoing strength. She said, "I offer forgiveness and I forgive him."

Three years after that awful day, on May 11, 2015, Melissa threw out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game. She didn't know that Cameron had a big surprise for her at that game.
