Divorce is difficult in any situation but is even more complex when children are involved. Then when a spouse gets remarried, there is a whole new set of problems that can set in. Disagreements between parents and children are common, but that doesn't stop them from being difficult.
A woman posted on Reddit in May 2021 about a growing feud between her and her wife's ex-husband that sparked after she gave her stepdaughter legal advice. The owner of the post explained that her stepdaughter, age 24, earns an income through posting on Instagram and YouTube. The girl's father decided to sign her up for an agency and came back with a contract in hand. The stepdaughter asked her stepmother to read the contract and give her opinion.
Upon reading the contract, the woman who made the post realized that her stepdaughter was being set up to fail, or at least lose money. The contract was biased against her. The woman decided to be honest with her stepdaughter and let her know that the contract was a bad idea, so the stepdaughter decided not to sign it.
After the girl's father heard about this, he was livid. He told the woman who made the post that she should have stayed out of the situation. Even worse, the woman's wife is angry with her too because she doesn't support her daughter in making money through social media. The whole situation seems to have spiraled out of control so the woman decided to make a post on Reddit asking for strangers to weigh in on if it was right or wrong to give her opinion.

The woman who made the post explained the details about the situation. "My stepdaughter runs an Instagram page/ YouTube channel with a decent amount of following. She makes some money off it and her father wanted her to sign up with an 'agency'. he had done most of the work and she had a contract in hand. She asked me to take a look at it. I am not a lawyer but I have taken part in some business negotiations," she wrote in her Reddit post.
Unfortunately, the contract was not as fair and beneficial as the father made it sound. "The document was biased against her. They got control over any IP she created, more than half the cut of all her earnings, and their marketing commitment was very vaguely defined."
"The only benefit of the contract was a 35K upfront payment for signing up but which had to be paid back if she failed to meet their content production targets. it was a deal where her upside was limited while their downside was protected," she said about the details of the contract. It sounds like she helped determine the validity of the deal.
The woman was honest with her stepdaughter about what she thought about the contract. "I told her that this deal was shit and she could do much better than whatever this company offered just by working on her own. She is a smart girl and she decided not to sign up. She really doesn't care. She is making money to support herself and do what she likes and does not want to go viral," the woman wrote.

Sadly, this honesty caused a rift between the woman and her stepdaughter's parents. She wrote, "Her father hates that I interfered in his relationship with his daughter. her mother (My wife) is not happy either as she doesn't want my daughter to be self-employed. I feel a bit guilty as I did not mince words when I described the deal, I was furious and the ensuing fallout between her dad and her has strained their relationships. I feel like I poured fire on a family feud."
She explained her perspective saying, "Her father is mad at me for poking my head where it belongs and upstaging him, he doesn't like me a lot anyway as he hates the fact his ex-wife married a woman. My wife is miffed that I am encouraging her to continue this career."
Reddit users were sure to leave their opinions on the situation and the majority felt she was in the right for giving her opinion. "'She asked me to take a look.' This right here means there is no way that you could ever be (wrong) … You didn't go out looking to cause a rift, and you didn't stick your nose where it didn't belong. She asked and you were honest with her. That's all that happened here," one commenter wrote.
Another commenter said, "I also find it rather alarming that her parents would be angry at you for pointing out such an obviously ill-written contract. Don't they want their daughter to have control over her life? Don't they want her to actually benefit from her own success? It seems to me that it was more important to her father to be a part of his daughter's success, rather than see her become a success on her own."
