Woman Says Mothers Who Aren't Slim Make "Excuses" But Years Pass And She Gains Weight Too

In 2013 Maria Kang became the most hated woman on the internet. A picture of herself and her three sons went viral. Dressed in a sports bra and boy shorts with killer abs her caption read, “What’s Your Excuse?” Heatwaves surged across the internet as angry moms verbally retaliated.

Kang, a fitness enthusiast, who just gave birth eight months prior resembled a sports model. She had a strict fitness schedule and didn’t understand why other moms couldn’t make the same effort. Outraged moms accused her of fat-shaming and insinuating that a less fit body meant you were lazy and making excuses for your appearance. Kang was deemed closed-minded and judgmental.

In truth, moms today often have full-time careers and dependent relatives, yet they are still expected to do most of the housework and childcare. Mental illness, physical disabilities and low access to healthy foods are just some of the “excuses” as to why someone might find it difficult to reach the same fitness goals as Kang.

Kang’s Change of Heart

Kang may have overlooked these facts, but life has a way of correcting us. Not long after the infamous post, Kang faced some obstacles of her own. She separated from her husband, suffered from depression, bulimia, body dysmorphia, and weight gain. Kang then began suffering from medical problems as a result of her 2003 breast implant surgery.

She made the decision to remove the implants, but suffered further complications of chest pressure, heart palpitations, and fatigue as reported here by NBC News.

Since her journey she’s had a change of heart. She says she still wants women to examine their personal motivations but realizes that celebrating your body is more important than appearances. Today she’s more flexible with her workout routine, promotes body positivity, and encourages women to treat their bodies with love.

What do you think of Kang’s earlier comments? Do you think she’s sincere in her apology? Pass this story on and keep the conversation going.
