Woman's 36-Lb Baby Wears Adult Diapers As A 1-Year-Old — Mom Says He Takes After His Big Father

Being a parent comes with many ups and downs as moms and dads navigate through the challenges and exciting moments of parenthood. Something that every parent looks forward to is watching their little one grow up into the best version of themselves and going on to make all of their dreams come true. However, one mother from Sydney, Australia, has found that having a baby does not necessarily mean that you will be taking care of a little one.

Jayde Leeder is a mom of three to Iggy, Minty and Sonny. Leeder gave birth to Sonny in December 2020, and it’s clear that her youngest is by far one of the most unique children she’s ever come across. Sonny weighed nine pounds when he was born and has continued to grow at quite an impressive pace ever since, leaving Leeder’s social media followers to marvel at her youngest son’s rapid growth and size.

Sonny is a 1-year-old baby but has already been making a big name for himself due to his huge personality and even bigger size. The tiny tot is actually not that tiny at all and weighs a whopping 36 pounds already. He has continuously outgrown many of the diaper sizes he has worn during his first year of life, even outgrowing the largest size that a particular brand has to offer.

Leeder opened up about what her pregnancy with Sonny was like and just how big her son is nowadays. She even explained how the 1-year-old baby has to wear adult diapers and gets his size from his Russian father.

Born in December 2020, Sonny weighed a slightly above average weight of nine pounds. Since then, the baby has continued to grow at a remarkable rate, outgrowing the largest size of Huggies diapers that the brand has to offer, according to the New York Post. His mother, Leeder, has shared more about her pregnancy journey with Sonny, as well as what her life as a mother of three is like on her social media platforms Instagram and TikTok.

Leeder explained that she now has to buy adult diapers for Sonny since the baby size doesn’t fit around his waist. Doctors were also concerned for her health during her pregnancy due to the size of her stomach and extensive weight loss, according to the New York Post. However, they later realized that Sonny was just bigger than they’d expected.

“When I was pregnant, he always measured a week or two bigger,” Leeder said. “Doctors were concerned about his size and they originally thought I had diabetes but thankfully that wasn’t the case — I just had a special boy on the way.”

Leeder attributed the boy’s size to his father. “His dad is a big solid Russian and my oldest was over nine pounds when he was born so it was to be expected in a way,” she said. The mom explained that as she watches Sonny learn how to crawl and stand, she’s noticed some skeletal problems, but nothing serious.

All in all, the 1-year-old is “a happy little character.” Leeder added, “I’m very lucky to have him in our beautiful family and can’t wait to watch him grow and develop in the future.”

But are chubby babies healthy?

There's a common belief that the plumper the baby, the healthier they are. However, recent research seems to have called this belief into question.

In 2011, a report from the U.S. Institute of Medicine found that overweight babies are, in fact, unhealthy.

“Contrary to the common perception that chubby babies are healthy babies and will naturally outgrow their baby fat, excess weight tends to persist,” said Leann Birch, the Pennsylvania State University professor who chaired the report’s committee.

According to the report's findings, around 20% of American children between ages 2 to 5 are overweight or obese. That's double the number of overweight babies compared to 30 years ago.

However, that isn't to say that babies that grow and gain weight quickly are necessarily unhealthy.

"Babies can double their weight in less than 6 months, and triple it by age 1. All babies need a high-fat diet to support this rapid growth and development. This is why your little one always seems to be hungry!" Noreen Iftikhar writes for Healthline.

"Babies store some of that fat under their skin because their developing bodies and brain need quick hits of energy all the time. Your baby might have some body rolls or big, soft cheeks. Don’t worry — this kind of 'fat' is normal and healthy for your baby."

That said, Iftikhar echoes some of the U.S. Institute of Medicine's conclusions, namely that heavier babies may be more likely to be overweight later in life. However, Iftikhar stresses that parents should talk to their child's pediatrician before changing a baby's habits. What's more, a baby under a year old should never be put on a weight-loss diet, according to Healthline.
