Woman Runs To Break Up Dog Fight, Finds Out She Stuck Her Hand Between Pup and Mountain Lion

When you live in a rural area or a suburban place that is in proximity to wildlife, you need to recognize and respect their right to be there. Human dwellings, roads and developments encroach into the habitat of wildlife, making it more difficult for wild animals to hunt for food or find partners.

When people build a house in the country and cut down trees or mow down the grass, they are encroaching into what used to be a wild space. This displaces the wildlife that used to inhabit the area.

One day, an unnamed woman in Idaho heard her dog growling and yelping from outside.

She stepped out of her house, assuming that her dog was in a fight with another dog. It was only when she grabbed both animals and physically pulled them apart that she realized the second animal was a mountain lion. The mountain lion was a small, 35-pound male.

Mountain lions are strong, and this male was no exception to the rule. They have long, sharp claws and sharp canine teeth. They are muscular and are designed to fight and kill their prey. The mountain lion's plans for this pup were no different.

The woman screamed. Her husband was in the house. He looked out the door and saw what was happening.

The woman wasn't just screaming from the pain of keeping the two vicious animals apart, though. She was screaming for him to get his gun. Without hesitation, he shot the wild creature so it would leave his pet alone.

The mountain lion died after being shot by the man. According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, this happens sometimes, and it's important to be aware that mountain lions are common in Idaho, especially near places with wintering deer.

"Idaho has an abundant and sustainable mountain lion population, but when lions attack pets, come too close people and communities, it creates a potential public safety hazard," their press release on the story said.

People often live near the spaces where mountain lions roam, or the animals are hungry and looking for food. An unsupervised dog is an easy target for a fast mountain lion - so be sure to keep your pets inside during the times when the predators are most active.
