It goes without saying, but it is important to respect animal life. Too often one hears horror stories of disreputable breeders who use animals to make a quick buck and then immediately discard them when they are no longer useful. A kitten from one such situation is the focus of a story out of North Dakota.

In September 2017, Megan Boehm was visiting a breeder when she happened upon a sickly-looking kitten. Megan disclosed in Love What Matters, that the breeder explained to her that she was planning on euthanizing the animal the next day as his numerous disabilities, including a missing eye, cleft lip, and crooked jaw, made him unlikely to be sold as a pet. Heartbroken, Megan and her mom took in the little guy and named him Cricket.

Writing for the blog Love What Matters, Megan said that baby Cricket was just skin and bones when he came into her home and had been denied much-needed veterinary care. Looking back, Megan thinks that the breeder was planning on putting Cricket to sleep as she didn’t want customers to think that she was a bad breeder.

Megan went on to explain that the breeder feared that customers would think there was something wrong with her breeding cat, or that she wasn’t giving the mother enough time to recover between litters.

When Cricket moved into Megan’s home, she and her family showered the little guy with all the love and attention owed to such a beautiful animal. The little kitten also got along great with the family’s other pets. Megan is the proud mom of 31 chickens, three cats, three dogs, and one hedgehog.

Quickly gaining weight, Cricket learned to love his new family as he grew into a playful, happy cat. Despite his disabilities, Cricket no longer requires much more specialized veterinary care.

At two years old, Cricket is now a social media star, having 98,000 followers on Instagram. Megan uses Cricket’s fame to spread awareness on special needs animals.

While some prospective pet owners might be hesitant to take in a special needs animal, Megan says that her own experience has shown that a special needs animal is not much different from any other pet. What is more is that Megan feels that special needs animals give their owners a unique type of love that is uncommon in the bond between an owner and a pet.

What do you think of Cricket’s story? Have you ever taken in a special needs pet?
