Woman Rescues Dog While Traveling, Dog Gives Birth In The Backseat On The Car Ride Home

Most people are sure to bring home a souvenir when they return from vacation. Rebecca Lynch works as a realtor and is a member of Florida's Poodle and Pooch Rescue. Rebecca and her husband were vacationing recently in Savannah, Georgia when they made a stop by a shelter in the city.

Rebecca says she was aware of the high-kill shelters in the area and wanted to save a dog that was at-risk before she went home. She said a friend had already told her about a Terrier named Lizzy who lived at the shelter. Lizzy was pregnant, was nursing a broken leg, and was facing the imminent threat of being put down.

Rebecca already decided she would adopt the dog. She fixed her backseat with blankets and made a bed for Lizzy. She wanted her new dog to be comfortable on the way back to Florida. She also prepared the space so she could be seated with the dog as her husband played chauffeur to them.

About an hour into their drive back to Florida, the plans of Rebecca and their husband changed. Lizzy grew restless and began to pant. Their new dog was in labor.

Rebecca says it was obvious that once Lizzy got comfortable in the backseat she decided it was time for her puppies to enter the world. Twenty minutes after the panting began, she gave birth.

Rebecca has experience with dog births and made sure the puppies were all born safely. She said her new dog did a good job. Rebecca took the dog and her new babies to the vet after the births to make sure Lizzy and the puppies were in good health. 

When all was said and done Lizzy gave birth to six puppies. Both mother and puppies stayed with the vet for a while before coming home. Rebecca will help Lizzy raise her pups until they are old enough for adoption.
