Thieves and criminals abound around the world, and it seems that every day people work to become even more sneaky and devious. A recent Costco experience proves that it’s impossible to be safe enough when deal with people you don’t know! And even the most careful employees can't do enough to protect the store's merchandise when a criminal decides to take action.

A Costco store in Clifton, New Jersey is recognizing the evil in the world more than ever before after a recent switch in the jewelry department and a mystery that is still unsolved.

One Sunday afternoon, a middle-aged woman went into the Costco store and went to the jewelry department where she asked to look at a particular diamond ring. Completely unsuspecting any foul play, the Costco employee opened the case and took out the ring which was valued at $28,000.

As they usually do, the customer wanted to hold it in her hand and view the ring up close. The customer studied the ring carefully and tried it on before handing it back to the employee, making it appear that she had decided not to make a purchase.

While she hadn’t made a purchase, she certainly had taken the pricey ring! The customer had managed to steal the ring by swapping it with a less expensive piece of jewelry that looked similar but only cost $1,999.99. What’s worse is that the cheaper ring had also been stolen from a different Costco earlier that day!

Before store officials were able to recognize the switch, it was too late: The thief was already long gone along with the ring.

Thanks to the help of police, the thief was soon identified and law officials made their way to her home where they could not find the ring. NBC reports that the woman told police where she hid it on a dead-end street and they were able to retrieve the ring.
