Woman Requests The Oldest, Hardest Dog To Adopt At The Shelter And Takes Him Home With Her

When going to adopt a dog, if you're like the majority of people, you will likely go for the youngest and healthiest dog. The reason for this is because, of course, you will want to spend as much time with your new pal as you can.

You also will want to see your pet grow and go through life with them. However, because of this, many shelters struggle to find homes for older dogs and dogs who are ill. Even though your potential furry friend may be older, the experience that comes with them can still be very rewarding as Melani Andrews demonstrates. Jake is a 12-year-old dog who suffers from bad skin, teeth, and terminal cancer. He was brought into Sacramento's Front Street Animal Shelter after being rescued as a stray according to an article in TODAY.

Jake is the prime example of a dog that most wouldn't even consider adopting. However, luckily for him, a woman named Melani Andrews was around to save him from such a terrible fate. She walked into the animal shelter and requested the oldest and hardest dog to adopt. She was promptly greeted with Jake. Despite his flaws, Melani decided to take him in and love him unconditionally. Melani recently lost her husband and needed companionship to help her during such a difficult time.

Melani and Jake were a great match and Jake is a much happier pup with his newfound best friend. He loves to play in the yard, tease the neighbor's dog, and spend his days with Melani. Since being adopted his health has improved and his skin is getting better. Even though there is still the sad truth that he has untreatable cancer, he will at least get to spend his final days being happy with someone to love and be loved by. This bittersweet story is one that can teach us all a lesson.

No matter the age, health, or type of dog, they all deserve to have someone to love them. You may even be surprised by what you find if you go searching for something a little out of the ordinary. An old dog really can teach us new tricks. They can teach us open-mindedness, compassion, understanding, and opening doors we might have never considered opening.
