Woman Receives $215,000 In Divorcement Settlement For Doing Household Chores Throughout 25-Year Marriage

Even just a few decades ago, the world suggested that a woman’s place is in the home and that roles are limited to doing household chores and tending to kids – but not anymore. Now, some women have the choice to carve their own paths and choose the careers they want to pursue. Of course, it’s not the same for everyone. But one way or another, there is progress on the road to achieving gender equality. While it’s still a long way to go for women in some nations, the fight continues and there is no turning back.

But for some women, there is already a victory. This was the case for a woman who got what she rightfully deserved in a divorce settlement. If you ask why, well, that’s because she did all the household chores and made notable contributions to their family-run business for 25 years without getting compensation. And what better way to get that much-deserved win than in the same month that celebrates every woman around the world?

In March 2023, a Spanish judge decided that a 48-year-old woman named Ivana Moral be paid $215,664 for doing all of the household chores throughout her 25-year marriage with her now ex-husband whom she divorced in 2020. She was initially awarded half of their house when they got divorced but that was it.

Meanwhile, the ruling of the court in Velez-Malaga, Southern Spain meant she will receive the minimum monthly professional wage in Spain equivalent to the 2 decades and a half that they were married to each other. She will also receive a $527 monthly pension from her ex-husband.

According to Euronews, the woman not only worked “exclusively” for their home, but she also worked “punctually” at their family gym business where she also did the cleaning.

The same family gym business allowed Moral’s ex-husband to buy a Porsche Cayenne, a Range Rover 4×4, BMW motorbikes and a 70-hectare olive oil farm, which was valued at $4.2 million.

The court said the woman deserved the compensation since she "was deprived of any possible career due to her exclusive dedication to the home and family” while it was the opposite for the man who, "throughout the years of marriage, accumulated and exponentially increased his assets.”

“I was supporting my husband in his work and in the family as a mother and a father. I was never allowed access to his financial affairs; everything was in his name,” Moral told inews.

Moral also explained that she made the decision to speak up not for herself but for all the women out there in the same situation as her.

“The reason I decided to speak to the media is I wanted women to know that we can claim for housework when there is a separation of goods agreement,” she said.

Moral’s lawyer, Marta Fuentes, said the ruling “represents the labour of all the women in the shadows” who provided fundamental support in “personal, marital, and familiar terms.”

“So he could get on in his career, she stayed at home to look after the children, and they never contacted anyone to help her. She was his shadow, working behind (him) so he could rise professionally and become someone,” Fuentes said.

Leaving a message to other women, Moral told CanalSur TV station: “I encourage all the women who are in the same situation as me to go after what is theirs.”
