Woman Rebukes Child For Touching Her Belongings, Gets Confronted By His Mother

Every now and then, people like to go out and enjoy a nice dinner with their friends or family members at a restaurant. It’s a great way to spend some quality time together while doing something nice with each other. Since restaurants are generally open to anyone, you can never be too sure how your dining experience will go.
For one 23-year-old woman, she simply just wanted to enjoy her meal at a family-friendly restaurant with some of her family members. Unfortunately, there was a child who appeared to be around 10 years old running around the restaurant and causing a scene. It’s safe to say that his behavior was less than acceptable for a public setting, especially when it came to the woman’s personal standards.
While people hope that parents will properly parent their children, it’s hard to say if they’re actually doing a good job or not without knowing the extenuating circumstances. However, people still hope to have a good time when they go out — regardless of how children behave themselves. In this particular situation, it got to the point where the child’s obnoxious behavior got to be too much as he ever went as far as to touch the woman’s belongings.
Enough was enough, and the woman yelled at the child. This didn’t sit well with the kid’s mother, who immediately confronted the younger woman for speaking to her child so rudely. Since then, the 23-year-old has wondered if she handled the situation correctly, so she went to Reddit in November 2021 and asked users for their thoughts and advice.

In her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) said that she and her family went out to a family-friendly restaurant on Nov. 6, 2021. They were there pretty early, so there were a lot of families with children there. OP mentioned that there was one child who appeared to be about 9 or 10 years old and was “yelling, running up and down the aisle between the tables and doing cartwheels (literally).”
The entire situation was definitely annoying and slightly disruptive, but OP and her family tried to ignore the kid and carry on with their dinner. OP later noticed the child’s mother wasn’t even paying attention to him aside from the times she called him over to go finish his food.
“We were sat in a booth and I had my stuff on the bench next to me, including a hat,” OP said. “One of the many times he ran past our table, he stopped, picked up my hat and put it on. He then turned to run off when I said sharply, ‘Give that back, right now.’” The child immediately gave the hat back as OP continued to scold him.
She said, “It is extremely rude to take other people’s things without asking, don’t do that again.” At this point, the child looked over to his mother. When she noticed, she got up and came over to angrily confront OP, telling the 23-year-old to leave her son alone. This exchange did not go well as the two women began to argue with each other about the child’s behavior.

OP continued, “I explained that he had taken my things and I was telling him not to, and she told me I shouldn’t stick my nose in and that as he’s ‘just a kid’ I should have just let him play with the hat, or asked for it back nicely without scolding him.”
Since then, OP has wondered if she handled the situation the right way or if she should have tried a different approach with the young child. She also clarified that she would not be wearing the hat again until it was professionally cleaned to make sure it was safe and sanitary to do so.
Despite the mother claiming OP was wrong for yelling at her child, many Reddit users agreed with OP’s actions in response to the child’s behavior. They even called out the mother for her lack of parenting skills. One user commented, “We certainly know where the kid gets his lack of manners from. I would have had some choice words for that woman about her parenting skills.”
Others seemed to agree, with one Redditor adding, “I have four kids and I would be absolutely appalled if they acted this way in public.” Another user said, “She should be embarrassed at such a public display of her lack of good parenting. If the child had been taught appropriate boundaries and to have respect for others, and had actually been appropriately supervised, there would have been no issue.”
Redditors also agreed that the child was old enough to know better and that his mother should have been keeping a closer eye on him.
