Woman Purchases Fertilized Egg From Restaurant, Then Hatches Pet Duckling Who Becomes Her Best Friend

It seems today more and more people are willing to be creative when it comes to their choice of pets. The day no longer exists when the only choice is whether to own a dog or a cat. A look in inside many homes will reveal pets of all types including raccoons, pigs, and ferrets.

One Malaysian woman recently made a purchase that resulted in the hatching of her pet and new best friend. The new friend is a duck that goes by the name of Daisy.

The 39-year-old woman, Erica Lim, was eating one day at a Vietnamese restaurant when she decided on a fateful purchase. The restaurant sells a dish called balut, which consists of fertilized eggs that have been precooked. The offering is a quick snack for patrons.

The sale of balut is a controversial matter in Southeast Asia and involves boiling a bird embryo that is then eaten from the shell.

Erica purchased a handful of eggs and instead of eating them decided to take them home for incubation. It took two weeks for Daisy to be hatched into Erica's life. The situation is a reminder of an episode of 'Friends' when Joey and Chandler took a pet duck home.

Once Erica had the eggs in her home, she constructed an incubator with a styrofoam box and two lamps used for heating.

She placed the eggs inside the incubator but did not possess much hope that any of them would hatch. She had attempted a similar experiment before and was unsuccessful.

Two weeks later, Erica was thrilled to see a beak poking through a tiny crack in one egg. One other egg eventually hatched prematurely and that baby duck was unable to survive.

However, Erica was happy to have Daisy. Erica has even given Daisy the nickname Bibit.

It was necessary for Daisy to remain close to the heating lamps for a while until she possessed a full growth of feathers.

The bond that developed between Erica and her new duckling was both instant and strong.

The days and nights they spend together are not very different from the interaction other pet owners have with their pets.

Daisy enjoys watching television with Erica while the two of them snuggle on the couch.

Daisy has no problem with getting dressed up either. You can see evidence of this fact in the photo of her in the pink crocheted shirt above.

There is no surprise that Daisy loves to play in the water. She spends much of her time splashing around in the tub.

Ducks grow up a little faster than dogs and cats. In a matter of months, Erica was a mother to a full-grown duck.

Daisy lays one egg every 25 hours. Erica enjoys sharing the eggs with friends and family.

Erica's pet duck is now two years old. Erica has included photos of her many experiences with Daisy to show the fun of owning a duck to others.

But she also emphasizes that anyone who wants to own a duck should only do so when they're completely prepared, because it is hard work.

What did you think about the road to duck ownership for Erica? Duck ownership isn't for everyone, but it's clear these two are making it work. Pass this along to any animal lovers you know.
