Woman Makes Waves By Telling SIL She Can't Stay At Her House While On Her Period

Nov 06, 2021 by apost team

Talking about menstruation can be embarrassing or uncomfortable for some people. This is why users on Reddit were shocked to hear that a woman told her sister-in-law she isn't allowed to stay at her house anymore while she is on her period. However, after the woman explained that the sister-in-law leaves behind an unhygienic mess every time she's menstruating, the people on Reddit turned to her side.

The woman explained in her post that the sister-in-law has stayed with her a couple of times in the past, and every time she was on her period, she would ruin the guest room sheets and leave a disgusting mess in the bathroom. She tried to get her husband to talk to his sister about it, but he was too uncomfortable with the conversation so it was never brought up.

The story was posted to Reddit in November 2021, prior to Thanksgiving. The sister-in-law invited herself to stay at the couple's home for the holiday without asking first. This prompted the woman to tell her sister-in-law that she was not welcome if she was on her period due to past messes. The sister was furious and called the woman rude names and said that no one in her family liked her.

After that, the woman was left wondering if she was rude to bring it up. She felt she may have caused unnecessary drama and asked other Reddit users if she was in the wrong. The responses to the post were mixed, with some agreeing that the woman had every right to make her request while others felt she should have worded it differently. Keep reading to learn more about this predicament.

From the subject of the post, it would seem that the woman was out of line but after hearing the full story it is clear that sister-in-law is the one acting rudely. The woman wrote:

"My sister-in-law invited herself to my home to stay for Thanksgiving but I don't want her sleeping at my home if she's on her period. A few times in the past she has come to my home and stayed while she has been on her period. Both times she slept in our guest room and ruined our sheets and mattress pads. It looked like a massacre."

The situation only got worse from there. "To make matters worse she didn't tell us, we had to find the disgusting sheets in our laundry and find the bloodstains on the mattress pad. Not only that, she has left tampons wrappers and bloody tampons in the toilet without flushing and blood on the toilet and inside of the toilet seat," said the original poster.

The couple thought the sister would be out of their lives, so they never brought it up. The woman explained, "I figured I wouldn't say anything because she was moving out of the country and l didn't expect her to visit anymore. Well, she just informed us that she's coming for Thanksgiving and I informed her that I don't want her sleeping over if she's on her period because the last few times she left a nasty mess while on her period and It was disgusting."

She added, "She cursed me out and called me a (rude name) and said that's why no one in her family likes me; they only tolerate me because I'm married to her brother."

The post has over a thousand comments on Reddit from users who wanted to share their opinions. Many felt that the mess left behind was a choice and not an accident. One commenter wrote, "Gross! Periods happen, not cleaning up after yourself is a disgusting choice."

Some commenters said they would have made the same decision. "Clean up your mess like an adult, don't lie and leave it for someone else to deal with. And her being unable to throw away trash and flush the toilet just makes it way worse. Her habits are disgusting and she clearly isn't interested in changing them - I wouldn't want her in my house either," said another user.

Others felt that the woman could have come up with a different reason for her sister-in-law not to stay over. They wrote, "I mean, I don't think there was a good reason for OP to say she can't stay over if she's on her period. She should have just said she doesn't want her to stay over, end of story."

The commenter continued, "I just think once OP had decided to not complain about it in a somewhat-constructive way at the time of the incident(s), it was a bit unfair to bring it up as a hard-and-fast condition of staying over. Also … she probably won't know this far in advance whether she'll be on her period during Thanksgiving, so it really seems like there was no need at all for OP to slap this condition on and dredge up the past incidents (that, again, she had already decided to let go) instead of just saying no."
