There are fewer things more difficult than losing weight. The act itself may seem simple to those who have never had to face this problem, but shedding excess pounds takes a lot more than calorie counting and exercise.

Weight loss requires a certain state of mind. You can’t tell someone to just start losing weight, they need to make that decision for themselves. It gets to a certain point where health complications surface and it becomes evidently clear that life has been changed for the worse. Clothes don’t fit, you feel awful, and you are just gradually ballooning in size beyond your control.

There are many reasons why someone may lose control of their weight, but one of the biggest culprits is food addiction. Depending on food for comfort, satisfaction, and happiness, much like alcohol or drugs, is a sad reality for many people.

TLC’s popular show “My 600-lb Life” follows people suffering from the same addictions and ailments overweight people face, but on a much more severe scale. An episode features the journey of a morbidly obese person, usually in the 600 lb range, as they battle through their weight loss journey.

One participant, Nikki Webster, gained popularity for her incredibly sad yet relatable story about her addiction to food. At just 34-years-old, Nikki felt stuck in a painful 600-lb body yet lacked the strength to curb her eating habits.

The show gave her chance to change her life for the better and track her progress. Because her situation was so dire, she moved from Arizona to Texas so that she could begin her treatments with physician Dr. Younan Nowzaradan. He instructed her to lose 50 pounds on her own before he could start helping her, and Nikki succeeded this goal in three months, which made her eligible for one of the biggest decisions she would ever have to make.

Nikki underwent Gastric Bypass, a weight loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach. The procedure is risky, since it doesn’t directly cause the patient to lose weight, and patients have been known to pass away during it.

“Earlier this year, my best friend Michael had a gastric bypass, and he died. That haunts me,” Nikki explained.

Despite having the surgery, Nikki still had to work on getting her food addiction under control if she wanted to see any results.

Nikki had nothing to worry about, because she managed to drop 200 pounds in 12 months, which left her feeling motivated and much happier than before. She wanted to make sure she maintained her progress, so Nikki started seeing a therapist to help her finally put her food addiction to rest.

Eventually Nikki had lost so much weight that she had excess skin that needed to be removed, which totaled 56 pounds by the end of the procedure. Her recovery was quick and she was soon home enjoying her new body and the freedom she gained from getting her life back on track.

To celebrate her weight loss, Nikki wanted to buy a pair of jeans, something she had always feared yet dreamed of being able to do.

But life hasn’t slowed down for Nikki yet. She found love soon after her time on the show ended, and was wedded in March 2018.

Life has been on an upward slope for Nikki since she made the scary decision to have Gastric Bypass surgery, but it’s a choice she will never regret.
