Woman Kicked Out Of Golden Corral For Her Crop Top Being ‘Too Provocative’

A story of a Pennsylvania woman has sparked a new debate on body shaming across the internet.

Sueretta Emke and her family were enjoying a meal at a local Golden Corral in Erie, Pennsylvania before she was approached by the manager of the restaurant.

As Sueretta went to the buffet, the manager came up to inform her that a customer had complained that she was dressed "too provocatively" for the family restaurant. The manager advised Sueretta that she would either have to put on something different or leave the restaurant.

After arguing for several minutes, Sueretta left the Golden Corral with her family. After she arrived home she made her anger public in a Facebook post.

Sueretta acknowledged that she felt a little self-conscious about wearing the top. She had never worn a crop top before but was persuaded to go to the Golden Corral with it after her husband told her that she looked good in it.

Now, Sueretta relayed that she thought she was singled out for wearing the top because of her weight.

Sueretta felt that in the manager’s thinking, she shouldn’t wear a crop top because she does not meet the world’s definition of attractive, according to her post:

“I have seen people in there wearing less and nothing is said to them but I really do believe something was said to me because I’m not thin so it’s not considered sexy. I’ve never owned a crop top before and I was nervous at first about wearing it but my husband loved the way it looked on me and encouraged me to wear it since I liked it so much. I really felt cute in it and now I never wanna wear that shirt again even though it was the first time I ever wore it.”

Sueretta's theory that she specifically was singled out was also supported by the manager's claim that the restaurant does not have a specific dress code, they only act on complaints from customers. The incident left Sueretta feeling utterly humiliated.

After Sueretta’s story went viral, the restaurant approached the family, apologizing for the incident and giving them several gift cards. A district manager even told Sueretta that the staff of the Erie location will be given additional training on how to respond to such incidents in the future.

In a later update to her Facebook post, Sueretta expressed how she was appreciative of the district manager reaching out to her family, noting that she hopes no one is treated the way she was treated again.

What do you think of Sueretta’s story? Do you think that the Golden Corral behaved appropriately or do you feel that they crossed a line in asking Sueretta and her family to leave?
