You've probably heard people describe squabbles using the phrase "fighting like cats and dogs." And it makes sense, because felines and canines don't always get along. But we might have to reconsider that description, thanks to a kind-hearted dog who not only got along with some kitties, but also saved their lives.

A woman who was driving on a freezing night in Ontario saw a motionless dog lying in the snow. Concerned, she stopped the car and got out. When she checked on the dog, she found an incredible, almost unbelievable surprise.

The dog had curled up in the snow to keep the kittens warm. Not knowing how long she might be lying in the cold, the protective dog seemed to be thinking only of the kittens. And it was her warmth and presence that helped the little ones survive the frigid weather.

The woman who found them called the local Pet and Wildlife Rescue, and the animals were moved to a safe, warm shelter. The dog and all five of the kittens were given standard medical checks and treatments by the shelter staff, in preparation for being adopted, reports the Daily Mail.

The staff gave the dog the name Serenity, and it suits her. She was attentive and tenderhearted to the little ones who needed her, and she patiently and calmly cared for them. Everyone knows that her motherly care had helped keep the helpless kittens alive.

Serenity and the kittens are fortunate to have been rescued by a shelter whose goal is to get animals into their forever homes quickly. Since the kittens would need foster care for a couple of months before they could be adopted, the shelter wanted to make sure not to let that delay Serenity's adoption.

According to the Daily Mail, when her story was shared, an unprecedented number of people applied to adopt Serenity. She is now living with her forever family, but she's had chances to visit "her babies" while they were receiving foster care through the shelter before being adopted.

It's heartwarming to watch the protectiveness of any mother dog who's taking care of her babies. But it has been especially fascinating to see this dog's attachment to her adopted babies. The story of Serenity and the kittens has been told around the world, because the gentle dog's actions showed her concern and generosity.

Serenity's story also shows us that references to "cats and dogs" don't always have to be about fighting. After all, Serenity's experience shows us that stories about cats and dogs are sometimes about "unlikely friends" instead! What do you think? Who do you know who would love to hear this story about unlikely friends?
