It is a terribly sad fact that 7 out of 10 homeless LGBT youth in this country cited family rejection as the major contributing factor to their homelessness. That is according to a report put out by the Williams Institute at UCLA Law, which also says that 40% of the 1.6 million homeless youth across the nation identify as LGBTQ+. With numbers like these, it’s clear that the struggle for gay rights is still ongoing and true equality doesn’t yet exist in the United States.

Not all parents reject their own children just because of their sexuality. One mother, Sara Cunningham, has a gay son and penned a book about the memoir of their experience entitled “How We Sleep At Night.” The book has become a Rosetta Stone for parents, especially Christian parents, for guidance on how to support their LGBTQ+ kids.

As part of her journey, Cunningham took a stand about parents not standing by their kids on one of the most important days of their lives: their wedding day. Even though gay marriage is now legalized, it doesn’t mean families support their weddings. As a reaction, she took to social media and said:

“PSA. If you need a mom to attend your same-sex wedding because your biological mom won't. Call me. I'm there. I'll be your biggest fan. I'll even bring the bubbles.”

It is accompanied by a photo of her with her hand in the air as though she’s volunteering for every lonely kid out there. It wasn’t long before the Hollywood actress (and Sara Cunningham doppelganger) Jamie Lee Curtis took notice.

She recently tweeted a photo of the two of them asking her followers to “stay tuned.” That’s because it turns out that Curtis is making a film about the very brave Sara Cunningham’s life, according to NBC. It was reported that Curtis bought the rights to her story and the two women look forward to working together on a scripted format.

Cunningham had to come to terms with her religion and told The Tennessean that she actually tried to “pray the gay away” for years. But in the end, knew her faith and her moral compass led her to accept her son the way he is. She supports him every day with her work for LGBTQ+ rights in several initiatives.

It’s going to be amazing to see her story come to life with the help of such a talented actress like Jamie Lee Curtis. We will all be staying tuned.

Isn’t Sara’s gesture a beautiful symbol of support? Are you going to plan to follow the development of the movie and see it in theaters? Let us know.
