For most mothers, nothing beats the feeling of seeing their babies for the first time ever! It comes with great joy to welcome the newborn into their life. Normally, a baby weighs between six and eight pounds at birth. A weight of over ten pounds is not very common and is usually special. It was thus a surprise for one woman, Maxxzandra Ford, to deliver a baby weighing 14 pounds and one ounce at birth in January 2015, breaking a hospital record in the process!

Maxxzandra’s pregnancy is quite intriguing. She only realized she was pregnant when she was in her third trimester, reports CNN Florida. Nothing alerted her that she was carrying a baby in her womb all along. Her body remained the same with the early signs of pregnancy such as nausea absent. When she found out she was pregnant, the pregnancy felt like that of twins. The change was remarkable. Her belly was so huge she was convinced it had to be twins.

The Birth of Baby Avery

Maxxzandra delivered her baby on January 29, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital. She had to go through 18 hours of labor before she gave birth to Avery Ford, who weighed the heaviest for a baby delivered at the hospital. The most amazing part is that she had a natural delivery. She was shocked to find out that her baby weighed 14lb 1oz. In her words, the labor was hard on her and she was cussing all through.

Large babies often face a few complications at birth such as trouble breathing or regulating blood sugar levels. Thus, they often spend some days at the neonatal intensive care for close monitoring, and so baby Avery had to receive such care to ensure he was fine. Allen Denson, with whom Maxxzandra has two other children, was excited about baby Avery. He joked about getting a linebacker rather than a fullback.

Special Babies

Statistics show that there is only one in every 100,000 births of babies weighing over 14 pounds. That makes the birth of baby Avery a very special case. He is one among a very few cases of such babies.

In December 2018, another woman gave birth to a baby weighing 14.3 pounds, reports CBS News. When Jennifer Medlock gave delivered Ali, she broke the hospital’s record for the heaviest baby. Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital had never delivered a baby weighing so much before! It was a great joy for the family of Jennifer and Eric along with their two other children as they welcomed the newest member of their family on that December 12.

I Expected Him to be Big, Just Not That Big!

As for baby Avery, after spending a little time in the intensive care unit, he went home a healthy baby. He has two siblings at home: brother Aleckxander and sister Jackxine.

Avery's father, Allen Denton, said he was "shocked" when Ford realized she was pregnant, let alone when Avery came out at more than 14 pounds, reports Tampa Bay Times.

"I got a linebacker now instead of a fullback," he said.

Childbirth can be intense, but it can have its surprises too. Avery's mother surely didn't expect to receive such a big bundle of joy! Did any of your family members ever experience a surprising birth or something similar?
