Woman Gets Even With Mother-In-Law For Upstaging Wedding, Taunting Her For 6 Years

If you like buying clothes in fast fashion retailers, chances are you’ve already experienced crossing paths with a person wearing the same clothes as you on the street. Admittedly, it can make anyone feel embarrassed. But imagine wearing the same outfit as your friend or a person close to you, at one of the most important events of your life. To make it worse, what if it was done intentionally?

A woman with the username EsmerldaWeatherwax took to a Reddit community thread called r/pettyrevenge in November 2022 to share her experience with her mother-in-law and what she did to get back at her years later.

The woman said her mother-in-law has always hated her from the start. But it became worse when she got pregnant with her now-husband without marrying each other first.

“Think evangelical catholic meets goth athiest. I moved in with her son and had a baby without getting married and she truly believed I was the devil incarnate sent to draw her baby boy into the depths of hell,” she said.

But it was only the tip of the iceberg as her mother-in-law did things one might probably only see in soap operas that traumatized her for six years.

“There followed years of petty microaggressions, a constant barrage of manipulation and guilt tripping and doing things like offering to watch the kids then pulling out 1/2 hour before, or buying the kids a puppy when we expressly said no and then blaming us when she had to take the poor thing back,” she shared.

But the trauma went beyond her relationship with her mother-in-law as it also affected her children.

“She pushed over my motorbike, turned up at my work, tried to rearrange the furniture in our house and constantly talked about God and Jesus in front of the kids and told them they were going to hell because they weren't baptized,” she said.

The woman didn’t want to get married since she felt like it was a waste of money. But since it was important for her partner, she agreed to it on the condition that they won’t do a church wedding.

But following the announcement of their engagement, her mother-in-law sent a priest to their house to schedule a date for their wedding and participate in premarital counseling. She got annoyed so she talked to her husband about it.

“I laid it out. We address it now, or no wedding,” the woman said.

The woman then shared what went down when they tried to talk to her partner’s mom.

“It went about as well as you'd expect. We visited and hubby tried to talk to her about how inappropriate her actions were. She screamed at him and cried, and then his sisters started on us both. Standing there, watching my hubby's heartbreak, my filter broke. I told them to stop, very loudly,” she revealed.

While her mother-in-law tried to speak, the woman shushed her and decided to leave the house.

“Hubby was distraught and I felt bad for him, but we got into couple's counseling and things got better,” the woman shared.

12 months later, the woman, her mother-in-law and her sisters-in-law decided to be civil towards each other. They even agreed to join her for dress shopping.

“The in-laws behaved and I found a dress that I didn't hate as much as the others. I paid for it and we left,” she explained.

To her dismay, the shop called her the next day to inform her that her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law ordered the same dress as her. “Mother-in-law and the sisters-in-law had ordered themselves THE EXACT SAME DRESS AS ME!” she said.

So, she decided to go back to the shop and order a new dress with a different design instead.

“I told hubby and he didn't really believe it I laughed about it for a bit, went back to the shop and ordered a new dress. This one was dark purple with black trim.”

She then gave wedding invitations to her in-laws which specifically stated they can wear "whatever you're comfortable in” as long as it was not a white-colored dress. But she knew they would still do it. So, she decided to send out invitations to all the people she knew who had worn wedding dresses to come to the event wearing one.

“All four of them turned up in their beautiful white dresses with their beautiful make up and hair — and were completely absorbed by the rest of the crowd. They didn't stand out. They looked exactly like everyone else,” she revealed.

They also invited the priest who came to them but did not officiate their wedding.

“We had a pagan handfasting, jumped over a broomstick and walked back down the aisle to 'Sweet child o' mine' while our two kids played air guitar and danced ahead of us,” she said.

The woman then came face-to-face with her mother-in-law that day. “She was incandescent with rage. She went to speak, but my hubby stepped forward ... and he shushed her! Right in front of everyone! It was glorious,” she remarked.

Describing herself as “petty,” she said: “Every now and then I wear the purple dress when I know she'll be at an event.”
