Woman Gains Stray Cat's Trust In Order To Have Mama Cat Lead Her Babies To Meet Her

A few months ago, Shea Prior met a stray cat in her Irvington, Alabama backyard. Eventually, the two became friends. This led the cat to reveal a secret she had been hiding from Shea the entire time: her newborn kittens.

The cat originally caught Shea's attention because of her striking color and pattern. For the first few days, Shea simply provided the cat with food. Once the cat became comfortable, she felt safe picking her up.

Upon doing so, Shea realized the cat was leaking milk. This meant she must have recently given birth. She told The Dodo, “I was petting her and went to pick her up and that’s when I realized she had milk in and had been nursing some babies.”

That's when her curiosity was peaked. Shea asked the cat to lead her to her litter of kittens. She explained this moment online:

“I started telling her to show me to her babies, and that I bet her babies were so pretty. All the while she’s just croaking away (because she can’t meow, she just croaks for some reason haha).”

It took a couple of days for the momma cat to process the new human's request, but she eventually obliged. One day while Shea was watering some plants in her backyard, the cat approached her. The mother seemed to be enticing Shea to follow her.

Shea was extremely excited to meet the young kittens. Finally, she arrived at where the kittens were hiding. The babies were extremely nervous and required some enticing to come out of their hiding spot. The mother cat laid on her side, calling out to her kittens. Eventually, they built up the courage to come out and say hi to the woman who'd been caring for their mother.

Shea revealed what the first few moments were like with the kittens to Bored Panda:

“One of the little gray ones was super brave and came up to me with his little pointy tail held up high in the air and let me pet him immediately. Eventually, after about 10 to 15 minutes, they had all come up to me and let me hold them and pet them.”

Once Shea saw how cute the entire litter was, she felt the need to care for them all. Her first thought was to take them all back to her house, which she did. She made a cozy home for them in her bathroom and even gave the momma a name. Shea called the mom Cricket. The name derived from the strange sound she would make instead of a meow.

She began making arrangments to adopt Cricket and place each of the kittens in a safe and loving home. However, this would require some financial assistance. Shea had recently lost her job and wasn't able to afford veterinary care on her own. She started a GoFundMe page. She was able to raise enough money for Cricket's vet bills.

Shea was able to find a home for the kittens, too. The GoFundMe raised enough money to pay for their shots and medications as well. Shea shared this response on her page:

“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated so far. I never thought we would get so much attention and that our goal would be reached so quickly! All 5 sweet babies have gone to their furever homes, and mama Cricket has an appointment for the vet on Thursday. Remaining funds and additional donations will be going to Save A Stray to help additional strays just like my Cricket. Thank you all again so much!!”

After a few days, Shea updated all her supporters on Facebook. Cricket made it back home and was "doing great" after being spayed. She was even given a "clean bill of health."

This happy story tells a real-life tale of a stranger's kindness and a mother's love. Cricket kept her kittens safe while searching for food, which resulted in help from a stranger. In the end, Cricket found a place to call home for herself and wonderful owners for each of her children.
