Woman Finds Genuine Happiness After Quitting Job As A Teacher To Become A Retail Worker

It’s not easy to quit a job one is passionate about. But for some people, passion is not enough – and understandably so. Some believe that people who chase after their passion should be lauded for being able to go after what they want without having to constantly worry about their finances. Then again, we should also not judge other people who let go of the jobs they are passionate about and go after professions with high-paying jobs. For one, these people also have bills to pay and families to feed. That’s why as painful as it can get sometimes, people opt to choose jobs that are outside of what they studied for or even expertise.

In December 2022, a woman named Maggie Perkins set people on TikTok abuzz after she left her work as a teacher to work at retail giant Costco.

In a video Perkins posted on TikTok, she explained the reason behind her decision to leave her job as a teacher.

Perkins, who would usually have winter breaks when she was still working as a teacher, said she no longer gets to experience it – but she has no regrets.

“I used to be a teacher and now I work at Costco. This is my first year not having a winter break. I do not miss it at all,” she wrote in the caption of her TikTok video.

Perkins went on to share that unlike before, when she would often get sick or exhausted due to the nature of her job, Perkins said her life has changed for the better. Perkins added that she would mostly spend her winter breaks recovering, only to go through the same thing all over again just to make ends meet.

“My pace of my work life now is so much better, I am not sick or exhausted like I used to be when I was a teacher. When I was a teacher I used my winter break basically to recover and go into the next semester of just surviving,” she said.

In the video, Perkins shared how happy she is with her current job. She showed some of the cookies she got as well as the backpack her manager gave her.

Perkins said she had never felt before the kind of energy she felt while working at Costco. She added by saying she always thought she could no longer have a job outside teaching, only to find out that she could do so much more.

“I can’t believe I ever felt so limited like I thought I couldn’t do something else,” she said.

In January 2023, Perkins appeared on “Varney & Co.,” where she explained the turning point at which she decided that being a teacher was no longer for her. One of the major contributors to her burnout was “job creep,” or the additional duties assigned to a person but never relieved.

“There’s a term called job creep, which is when additional duties are slowly assigned to you, and then those duties are never relieved from you,” she explained.

While she often gets reminded about her passion for teaching, Perkins said these things eventually led her to feel burned out.

“And over time, it causes you to be burned out from the first reason you became a teacher, which is loving the students, loving teaching. And then they, you know, remind you (to) remember your why and remember your passion,” she remarked.
