Woman Feeds Blind Old Raccoon, Pulls Out Camera When Two Small "Bodyguards" Come Around To Help

A woman named Eryn lived in the Illinois countryside and fed a local raccoon for five years. As he got older, she noticed that he seemed to be going blind. Two black kittens appeared one day and seemed to be serving as the raccoon’s bodyguards and escorts.

Raccoons typically live for only three years, so a five-year-old raccoon was definitely a senior citizen for his species. Eryn noticed that the raccoon walked into things, was afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow.

The raccoon was also missing his lower lip, so he could only eat soft foods. He didn’t like canned pet food, so Eryn gave him things like pasta soaked in cream of chicken soup.

In October 2014, two black kittens turned up. Eryn initially thought that they were only following the raccoon because they had seen her feed him. She eventually realized, however, that the kittens were escorting and protecting the raccoon. About a month after the kittens’ arrival, Eryn filmed the three animals together.

The video shows one kitten escorting the raccoon down the porch steps as if it wanted to make sure he didn’t fall. Later, both kittens accompany the raccoon across the lawn, often walking on either side of him. They definitely seem to be acting as his eyes.

In December 2014, Eryn adopted the kittens and had them microchipped and neutered. They adjusted to living in Eryn’s house with her and another cat named Squirt. They would still keep an eye on their raccoon friend, however. He eventually passed away in June 2015, after a long life.

Eryn needed the kittens at least as much as they needed her. Eryn’s mother and a 15-year-old cat died within nine days of each other and working to tame the stray kittens helped Eryn cope with her losses.
